Carson City area weather: Rain and snow possible this weekend and next week
After a few days of quiet weather for Carson City and western Nevada, a more active storm pattern is taking shape beginning as early as this Saturday and continuing well into next week, according to the National Weather Service.
The first round of precipitation of 2019 is becoming more likely to happen Saturday and Saturday night, with a mix of rain and snow in the lower valleys of western Nevada and the Surprise Valley.
Snow is becoming more likely in the higher elevations, prompting the weather service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe and much of the Sierra from late Friday night through Sunday morning, with probable impacts to travel Sunday.
Moderate to heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 13 inches, except 12 to 22 inches above 7,000 feet with the highest accumulations possible west of Highway 89 in the Lake Tahoe Basin and west of Highway 395 in Mono County. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph.
Additional periods of mountain snow, with a mix of rain and snow in valleys, could occur from Monday through at least the middle of next week. Anyone with travel plans this coming weekend and next week should check back frequently for the latest forecast updates.
The weather service advises that now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
