Carson City weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning, extreme fire danger for region
With a strong cold front pushing into the region that will bring gusty winds and low humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northern and western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region. Weather conditions will be especially dangerous along the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes.
Strong winds and low humidity are expected Sunday into Monday. Most areas will see southwest winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph, but along the 395 corridor, downslope enhancement is likely, according to the weather service. Stronger gusts to 60 mph are likely for wind prone areas along the 395 corridor.
The Red Flag Warning is in effect Sunday into Monday. Humidity will drop into the single digits and teens Sunday with poor recovery Sunday night. Strong winds will continue into Monday afternoon.
These conditions will result in extremely rapid fire growth for any new fires along the 395 corridor. If you are in a wind prone location, the weather service advises to have an evacuation plan ready in case a new fire threatens your location.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires and urges those outdoors to follow local fire restrictions.
Daytime highs around the Carson City region will be in the mid-80s Sunday and then drop to the high 60s on Monday with a chance of showers.
Overnight lows Monday will be in the mid 30s, according to the weather service. Daytime high temperatures will be in the low 70s Tuesday and Wednesday, with night time lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
