Carson City weather: Sunny with noticeable cool down through the weekend
A noticeable cooling trend will return to the Carson City region beginning Friday with breezy conditions followed by sunny skies and below normal daytime high temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
Breezy conditions are likely for the Carson City area Friday though, at this time, not significant enough for the weather service to issue a fire weather watch. That's not the case for west central Nevada, however, where a Red Flag Warning is in place Friday.
With containment efforts expected to continue Friday in the Voltaire Canyon area in southwest Carson City where a wildfire fire erupted Tuesday, the weather service cautions that any spark may cause a wildfire in the dry grass and brush.
Forecasters advise those spending time outside this weekend to be mindful of any activity that may cause a spark, especially if target shooting or starting a campfire.
The recent period of warm and dry weather has led to some increased drying of grasses in west central Nevada basin and range, mineral and southern Lyon counties, prompting a Red Flag Warning from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Significant winds are projected for ahead of the approaching cold front. Gusts Friday could reach 40 mph while humidities drop into the 8-16 percent range in the Red Flag Warning areas.
Other areas in Western Nevada — from Reno to Carson City and Carson Valley — there will be periods of breezy conditions on Friday, but either fuel moistures have not yet dropped to critical levels or humidity won't be as low, according to the weather service.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect Friday for the Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake, Lahontan and Rye Patch. If conditions change, a Fire Weather Watch will go up, forecasters say.
Those heading out on area lakes need to be aware of the potential for hazardous boating conditions through Saturday. Winds can increase suddenly on lakes by late morning or early afternoon, catching you off guard and leaving you in a dangerous situation. If you do kayak or paddle board, remember to wear your personal floatation device at all times. Water temperatures are in the 50s and 60s.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and eastern Lyon County areas, weekend temperatures will dip below normal with sunny skies and daytime highs in the mid 70s Friday, mid-60s Saturday and low 60s Sunday.
