Carson City weather: Slushy roads possible for commutes, more rain and snow on the way
Rain has changed to heavy, wet snow Thursday morning along lower valley floors above Carson City, Minden, Reno and Sparks, according to the National Weather Service.
The heavier snow could bring slushy accumulations to roads above the lower valley floors until between 6 and 7 a.m. before snowfall rates decrease and allow any snow on roads to melt. Be prepared for slick conditions and check NDOT for the latest road conditions before traveling this morning. Go here for winter weather driving tips offered by the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Also noteworthy Thursday morning: Snow-covered roads are already present over Geiger Grade, Spooner Summit, and the Mount Rose Highway. Snow-covered roads may persist through at least the morning in the higher elevations.
Meanwhile, winter storms are still on track for next several days that will bring heavy snow to the Sierra, especially above 7,000 feet. As much as 5 feet of snow along the Sierra crest south of Tahoe can be expected, which is great news for the snowpack and winter recreation.
Significant travel impacts are expected on-and-off through Saturday. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour during the peak mountain snow periods through Thursday can also be expected.
The best chance for snow to accumulate in the lower valleys of Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties is late Friday night through Saturday morning, but will mostly melt off considering wet surfaces and relatively warm ground.
Still, be on the look out for slick spots, especially if you will be heading out of the lowest portion of the valleys. If you need to cross the Sierra, Friday morning through early Friday afternoon might be a decent window depending on snow cleanup from the first storm. Otherwise, the weather service advises it may be best to wait until late Saturday or Sunday.
Temperatures will become very cold over the weekend through early next week. Make sure to finish all winter preparations today and plan accordingly if you must travel over Sierra passes during the storm. Keep up to date with the forecast as more active weather is looking likely for early December.
