What Works: New Year, Now What?

I believe I felt a collective sigh of relief when 2016 left and 2017 made its grand entrance. The new year is filled with so much hope, promise, and delight. Yet, I was disappointed when I opened Facebook the other day and one person stated that 2017 is already proving to be just like 2016 for them.

What Works: Celebrity deaths wake us up to our own mortality

No one makes it out of life alive. Sadly, it’s a fact. We all know it. But when celebrities from some of the best times of our lives pass, like today’s passing of Carrie Fisher, we come together with a collective sigh. We are human. Our icons are passing. Gene Wilder, George Michael, Prince, and David Bowie have all passed this year. We are all collectively conscious of the impermanence of life.

What Works: Be Present

In the hustle and bustle of getting presents bought, healing from a respiratory infection, and doing everything else that makes the holidays merry and bright, I drew an absolute blank for a topic for my column until last night. It wasn’t until I met with a client of mine that I got served up some of my own gravy. She said, "be present."

What Works: The Power of Focus

I used to pride myself on being a generalist. Being a Jane of all trades was a darn good survival mechanism when I was trying to make ends meet. I could do a little writing here. A little consulting here. And, believe me, I would consult on anything. I found comfort in this kitchen sink approach to life.

What Works: The most important gift on your list is the one to yourself

There are 19 days until Christmas. The holiday season is in full swing. Trees are going up. Houses are getting decorated. Shopping happens between kids’ activities and holiday family fun. Making sure all the presents are well hidden is a feat within itself! Yet there is one gift that sometimes gets forgotten. That gift is the gift you give to yourself.

What Works: Tis the Season to Volunteer

I volunteer a lot of my time. Every potential client gets 30 minutes on the phone with me. I work with community organizations to support local causes. Advocates to End Domestic Violence is one of those. Each holiday, I usually write something about the importance of volunteerism. Yet, the power and two-way benefit of volunteerism didn’t hit me until I returned home to Carson City.
