Nationally renowned climate scientist to keynote Tahoe meteorologist conference

Author, adventurer David Quammen to give talk at UNR on viruses that plague the world
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/29/2015 - 4:04pmScience author and journalist David Quammen will give a lecture at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Discover Science Lecture Series, Thursday, Feb. 4.
The lecture, titled “Ebola and Beyond: Scary Viruses in a Globalized World,” will focus on his most recent works about Ebola and AIDS – his books “The Chimp and the River” and “Ebola” – which stem from his acclaimed book about emerging diseases, “Spillover.”
Quammen is a journalist as well as a science, nature and travel writer. He has authored 15 books, five of them fiction.

Alum Presents Refugee information
CHS alum, Kaitlin Brush (class of 2004), presented to social studies classes this past month. Her informational presentation focused on the definition of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons, and the current refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe and how different European countries are working to address the growing number of refugees.
Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Howell posthumously recognized at award ceremony

Of the five nomination categories, one name stood out for nomination for Deputy of the year, Deputy Carl Howell who was killed in the line of duty Aug. 15, 2015.
Carson High School sports medicine program provides more than just education

Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.
Robotics developed at UNR to help blind and visually impaired to recognize objects

I jumped at the opportunity to participate in an event that brings a community together, raises funds and breaks a world record. It was a little intimidating for sure, but I’m working closely with the Board of Directors of the Carson City Schools Foundation and learning so much in the process.
UNR technology program targets middle school students for careers in computer science

According to University of Nevada, Reno Professor of Mathematics Education & Educational Equity Lynda Wiest, this gender gap is significant.

Senator Square: CHS students bring home top honors at speech and debate tourney

Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Senator Square: Rivalry between Carson and Douglas spreads to school staffs
Submitted by editor on Sat, 11/07/2015 - 11:11pmThe staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.
Science and technology grant allows WNC to offer advanced manufacturing training

First female American Indian and Old West actor to serve as Nevada Day parade grand marshals

Rupert — whose husband’s great-grandfather, Henry Moses Rupert, was the first American Indian grand marshal — will be the first female American Indian to marshal the 77th annual parade Saturday, 10 a.m. in downtown Carson City.
WNC student works toward degree through unique college, community partnership

Raised in Southern California primarily by his two grandfathers, one retired Navy and the other a pastor, Shoff moved to Carson City in 2000 to live with his uncle, and get back on the right track. Early brushes with the law for being, as he said, “young and dumb,” didn’t deter him from seeking a better life.
Senator Square: CHS students work alongside medical professionals at RAM event
Submitted by editor on Sun, 10/25/2015 - 9:47amLast weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.
The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

“I saw that opportunity,” she said. “I think it’s something like 70 percent men, so I figured as a woman I’d have a better chance.”
WNC's Western Nevada Musical Theatre recognized as launchpad to professional careers

In addition to the high quality theatre that it has offered the region, many former student/performers have gone on to careers in Hollywood, on Broadway, in academia and more.
Carson City Manager Joins the Nevada State EB-5 Regional Center’s Board of Directors

Additionally, Marano mentors at the Adams Hub for Innovation and is a member of the Western Nevada College Institutional Advisory Council. Further, he has been an active member of International City Managers’ Association.

Charles Sehe, now 92, was a teenaged sailor on the USS Nevada when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II.
Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship at UNR turns ideas into action

Since opening its doors in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business in September 2014, the Ozmen Center has built an interdisciplinary program spanning across campus and out into the community.
“We teach a different way of thinking,” Chris Howard, Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship director, said. “I describe it as diagonal thinking. We take the knowledge students learn in class and apply it to get different and desired results.”
