June marks an exciting time for high school seniors awaiting their graduation from high school and for some, this is not the easiest feat.

For those youth ordered to one of the 3 Nevada juvenile justice facilities — Summit View Youth Center, Caliente Youth Center and Nevada Training Youth Center — graduating from high school may not have been something they thought they could achieve.

With her son graduating from high school, Sue Jones began to rethink her own career as a math teacher at Carson High School. More and more, she was drawn back to retail, where she had gotten her start at the Ace Hardware her father owned in Incline Village.

Then it came to her — in a dream — the store that would help people connect with one another through meaningful gifts.

“I really just woke up with this idea of having a very heartfelt store,” she said.

As a voter like you, I am listening to, viewing, and reading much on Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. One is well known in Washington politics and the other also well known but outside the Washington beltway in terms of political experience. Both Clinton and Trump are the presumptive Democratic and Republican candidates for president of the United States respectively. Both have fought very contentious campaigns, Both do not carry a high degree of trust with the American voting public, but for different reasons.

There is little argument that every child needs financial and emotional support to grow and flourish. As the parent, it is your duty to support your children from the time of birth, including pregnancy and birth related expenses, until the child reaches the age of majority (in Nevada, 18 years of age) and is no longer enrolled in high school.

This obligation is true even if the parents are not married and even when one parent has not been, or is not involved in the child’s life. Although there are exceptions to this scenario, this is the case for most family situations.

As Western Nevada College in Carson City ended its baseball program last month, center fielder DJ Peters finished the season with a flourish.

The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Peters in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft, and by the beginning of the week, he and his representatives had worked out a contract with his favorite childhood team.

Nevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.

Nearly doubling last year’s attendance, well over 100 people and many active military personnel attended the ceremony, which featured the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the Army Song, and welcome remarks by emcee Guy Clifton.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education graphic design student, Jose Conchas Vargas, has been selected to attend the Smallwood Multi-Media Boot Camp June 13-23 at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.

DJ Peters broke a number of records for Western Nevada College during his final season for the Wildcats in 2016. He added one more on Friday morning when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the WNC outfielder in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Carson Tahoe Health on Thursday unveiled its newly updated healthcare exhibit located inside the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City.

Amidst rising temperatures and summertime heat Saturday morning, Carson High School graduated its Class of 2016.

More than 400 graduates listed in the program participated in commencement and the grand procession, which started off the ceremony.

Karen Kerley, 67, passed away on May 28, 2016 in Minden, Nevada with family and friends surrounded. Karen was born Oct. 23, 1948 in Huntington Beach, California to Roger Kerley and Lindalee (Plumleigh) Kerley. She graduated at Marine High School Class of 1966 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy at UCLA College.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – This week marked the end of Nevada’s online assessment window. More than 270,000 students successfully completed the Smarter Balanced and Science Grade 5 and 8 online assessments this year.

The 31-year veteran teacher is retiring from the Carson City School District at the end of this week, leaving behind a legacy of unprecedented success in the CHS Culinary Arts Department.

Local Carson High School 2013 graduate Zachary Kind was honored by the University of Nevada, Reno. Zachary was named Phi Kappa Phi outstanding Junior 2016. Zachary is majoring in biology and is applying for Dental School in the fall. Zachary has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his college career. He is also active in the Dental Club where he is currently serving as president.

Richard Pitts was 15 the first time he was asked to umpire a game. He’d gone to watch a younger classmate play baseball just to find out the game was in jeopardy because only one official had shown up.

He asked Pitts to step in.

No one should have to fight blindly against the enemy — knowledge IS power, and the truth of any situation even more powerful. No one has ever had all the facts for a set of circumstances or a certain situation, only God has the entire picture, so human expertise has its limitations. However, gathering as many facts as possible, organizing them in a logical progression, studying them carefully, looking for strengths and weaknesses, can ultimately bring together a rather comprehensive picture for all to see.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has announced Joey Orduna Hastings as the new chief executive officer after a nationwide search. She will start on July 15, 2016.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education graphic design III student, Amanda Yau, received $100 and a new tablet computer from Western Nevada College’s soccer club coach Ian Hill last week. Stella Carroll, a junior at CHS, submitted the second-place design winning a $50 gift card.

Northern Nevadans fighting against Parkinson's Disease have a new ally in their corner.

Francisco Rodriguez, owner of Tazmanian Boxing Club in North Carson City, recently earned national certification to train individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease, a distinction that makes him unique among other area boxing coaches and trainers.

As the weather moves from a beautiful spring to a hot summer, staying at home is simply out of the question, especially with two free performances of music and drama aimed at the community of Carson City. The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at their annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents The Taming of the Shrew (in the old west) on May 26.

As lead prosecutor, Andrew McCarthy, continued to involve himself and his legal team in further and deeper knowledge of the enemy in order to successfully bring to trial and to win the U.S. government's case against Sheik Abdel Rahman, aka the Blind Sheik, for the World Trade Center bombing which killed and maimed hundreds of Americans in 1993 in New York City.

Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the current status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City. The presentation on the NHP to the Club will occur at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 18.

The Nevada Judges Association consisting of over 80 Justices of the Peace and Municipal Court Judges from the Justice and Municipal Courts throughout the State of Nevada honored Carson City Justice of the Peace/Municipal Court Judge John Tatro with the Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sophie Sheppard, artist and daughter of the noted Nevada artist and educator Craig Sheppard will join exhibit curator Jim McCormick to discuss the elder Sheppard's impact on the arts in Nevada at a free public reception and discussion from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 3 in Carson City. The discussion of “A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard” begins at 6 p.m.

This August, two 2016 CHS graduates, and a student who finished her sophomore year, will begin another year of high school in a new country, learning a new language, and living with a different family.

Seniors MacKenzie Gilliam and Delaney Fine, and sophomore Alexa Conrad, were chosen for the Rotary exchange program. Gilliam will be going to Italy, Fine to Belgium and Conrad to Leon, France.

Years from now Western Nevada College baseball fans will say they watched DJ Peters play when he was in Wildcat blue and white uniform.

As his Major League Baseball draft stock continues to rise during his sophomore season, Peters ascended the Wildcat record book with his 13th home run of the season on Sunday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
