UNR named 'Top School' for military and veteran student support
For its efforts in providing academic and advising support to military and veteran students, the University of Nevada, Reno has been designated as a “Top School” by the Military Advanced Education journal for its 2016 Guide to Colleges and Universities.
In conjunction with Veterans Day, Veteran Services celebrates this designation for the third consecutive year and continues its tradition of 2,800 placing American flags in the Gateway Plaza in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union. The University veteran groups will also be walking in the Veterans Day parade on Virginia St. from 11 a.m. to noon.
“This designation recognizes the support we continuously strive to offer our military and veteran students,” Terina Caserto, University director of the Veteran Services Office, said.
According to the Military Advanced Education journal, the University has the best rating for its military culture, among other ratings for flexibility, financial aid and support services.
The Veteran Services Office provides a support system for veteran students to aid them in applying for and receiving veteran education benefits. The office also provides services for admission advising, monitors academic progress, offers referrals to local veterans resources, provides scholarship information and resources and offers assistance for career choices, counseling and advising.
Additionally, University Veteran Services is one of the few sites nationally to house the Veteran Integration to Academic Leadership grant, which includes a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs outreach technician and a licensed clinical social worker in its office to offer services associated with health care enrollment, mental health and transitional counseling.
In the beginning of 2016, Veteran Services will expand its office location in conjunction with the opening of the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center.
The new Nevada Military Support Alliance Veterans’ and Military Center will be home to 1,200 square feet of office, conference and lounge space dedicated to professional development and degree attainment for the University’s military and veteran student population.
