April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month, said Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada, and Randy Putzer has been named the club's Boxer of the Month.

Jules Radow of Carson City has been selected posthumously as Boxer of the Month for February at Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada (RSBNN), an athletic program for individuals battling Parkinson's Disease and Parkinson's-like symptoms, Certified Rock Steady Boxing Trainer and Tazmanian Boxing Club owner Francisco Rodriguez said.

There is something about Francisco Rodriguez that screams tenacity.

It could be the fact that he reminds me of a kinder, gentler Mickey Goldmill, the rough-edged, gravelly-voiced fictional manager of Rocky Balboa played superbly by actor Burgess Meredith. He never gave up believing in Balboa, even when Rocky had quit on himself.

Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada, a Carson City-based exercise club for individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease and Parkinson's-like symptoms, has recognized member Bob Sanders as its Boxer of the Month for January.

Tazmanian Boxing Club owner and certified Rock Steady Boxing Club trainer Francisco Rodriguez is taking the fight against Parkinson's Disease to another level.

The former Bantam-weight professional boxing champion is expanding the program introduced to Carson City in December 2015 to the Truckee Meadows starting Tuesday.

Students at CHS are always on the move in many mighty ways. With the holidays approaching, Carson High School students are the next generation of kids standing up for a truth they believe in instead of ignoring the challenges they see before them.

A music festival and memorial event to honor fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell has been set for Aug. 19, 2017 at Battle Born Harley-Davidson in Carson City, according to organizers.

Even though homecoming has now concluded, Carson High School is by no means finished with its current and upcoming events. Not only is the CHS National Honor Society Blood Drive coming up, Oct. 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the small gym, but Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed Oct. 3-7 to be the “Week of Respect” throughout the state of Nevada.

In both sports and life, we love great champions.

But athletic dominance alone isn't what makes a champion great. Character is what elevates some to the greatness. Humility, integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others are what set some champions apart.

That’s why we think more highly of Greg Maddux than Roger Clemens. Maddux was all class all the time, while Clemens was full of ego, aggression and controversy.

The Carson City Boxing Club invites you to watch local boxers display their boxing skills at the Wednesday Night Farmers Market in McFadden Plaza from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 7.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. The ninth annual Fallon Fights ‘Rural Rumble’ returns with three title fights and two nationally televised bouts at the Fallon Fairgrounds, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. Reno’s Oscar “Chapito” Vasquez (9-1, 2 KOs) fights for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Light Flyweight title against Puerto Rico’s Janiel Rivera (14-2- 3, 8 KOs) in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds, one of 10 total matchups.

Author Guy Clifton will speak on his book Dempsey in Nevada in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 6, at 10 a.m.

Francisco Rodriguez, owner of Tazmanian Boxing Club in North Carson City, recently earned national certification to train individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease, a distinction that makes him unique among other area boxing coaches and trainers.

The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at their annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents The Taming of the Shrew (in the old west) on May 26.

A women’s self defense workshop is coming to Carson City on March 27th. he event, sponsored by the Tasmanian Boxing Club is free, but there is limited availability so it’s best to call and get on the list early. Grand Master “Master of the Arts” Tim Spellman will be unhand to introduce participants to the insights of Kenpokempo and a practical approach to self defense.

Companies seeking wellness plans for their employees are encouraged to attend orientations hosted by 6Weekworkout on Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at the business’s new key code circuit training facility at 3476 Executive Pointe Way, Suite 15, in Carson City.

6Weekworkout is the first business of its kind in the nation to be part of a state Wellness program, said owner Colleen Bannister.

She sees the new circuit training facility as an answer to companies wanting to start wellness programs.

At the Tazmanian Boxing Club in north Carson City, clients are receiving much more than training to become pugilists. They are gaining an upper hand in the fight against Parkinson's Disease.

Gym owner Francisco Rodriguez has partnered with Nina Vogel, a licensed physical therapist with Carson-Tahoe Health, to offer a therapeutic way for Parkinson’s patients to combat the devastating effects of the neurological disease through the discipline of boxing.

Fighters Against Child Abuse is holding its Third Annual Christmas Coat, Toy and Donation Drive to benefit Carson, Douglas, and Lyon County Children. All donations stay in The Greater Carson Area, and 100% of all donations will be used to benefit an abused, neglected, or at-risk child.

FACA is seeking new clothing, socks, underwear, new coats, new toys, and Gift Cards to provide tangible goods to abused children, CASA, Austin's House Child Abuse Emergency Shelter, and Ventana Sierra, an organization that provides housing for aged-out Foster kids.
