Rock Steady Boxing names Jules Radow February Boxer of the Month
Jules Radow of Carson City has been selected posthumously as Boxer of the Month for February at Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada (RSBNN), an athletic program for individuals battling Parkinson's Disease and Parkinson's-like symptoms, Certified Rock Steady Boxing Trainer and Tazmanian Boxing Club owner Francisco Rodriguez said.
"Jules Radow [was] our sweet, funny, kind, gentle, smiling, inspirational friend, and our boxer of the month," RSBNN said in its February newsletter.
Radow had boxing in his blood, RSBNN said. His father was a professional boxer in the 1930s.
"As a young man, Jules tried it, but it just wasn’t his thing, not at least at that time," RSBNN said.
Then about five years ago, Jules was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He also suffered from Lewy Bodies Dementia (LBD), a challenging aspect that happens to a small percentage of people with Parkinson’s Disease, RSBNN said.
The condition can lead to problems with thinking, behavior and mood.
"Jules had a tougher fight than most of us," RSBNN said. "Yet, what did we all see in him? We saw a real fighter – a fighter for his spirit, his soul, his attempt to hold on to the best in himself."
His wife, Marsha, said that when Jules would walk into the gym he would high-five everyone, slap them on the back, and always have a big smile on his face throughout the whole workout.
She said on their home he would talk about the others in the session and ask if she saw this person do this, and that person do that. He had a lot of respect for everyone there.
"The last few months were great because he got individual attention from mostly Angie, and later with Julie or Lily," RSBNN said.
Radow said that the other guys there, “were like brothers,” and he always had a wonderful time there. He usually looked forward to going.
However, on occasion he’d say, not today. Marsha said she would convince him and he’d always end up loving it.
When they held Jules’ memorial service, Marsha said she’d heard it was standing room only. There were people from Rock Steady there, and there were people from all parts of his life.
With tearful recollection, Marsha said she is so grateful to everyone in Rock Steady who not only welcomed Jules, but really loved him and let him know he was appreciated every day.
In December, Jules and Marsha celebrated their 55 wedding anniversary. They have a strong and beautiful family, who all managed to be at his bedside before he died.
“I miss the twinkle in his eyes!” Marsha said.
We fondly remember this strong man, battling so much, yet always smiling, always trying, and always lifting our spirits to try harder, too.
That’s what we all do in each Rock Steady session, and it’s his strength that will continue to inspire us more.
So, this month we honor a real warrior who put up a tough fight with smiles, dignity, and love shining through to the very end. We honor our very own, Jules Radow.
