March 10th marks the annual National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide observance that encourages women to take control in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness by offering support, encouraging discussion, and teaching women and girls about prevention, testing for and the management of HIV/AIDS.

Governer Declares Saturday, March 7 Suddenly Sleep Saturday-A Day for Narcolepsy Awareness

Nevada Governor, Brian Sandoval, has signed an official proclamation designating Saturday, March 7, 2015, as Suddenly Sleepy Saturday — A Day for Narcolepsy Awareness. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of narcolepsy, a chronic neurological sleep disorder which affects one in every 2,000 people in the United States. While the cause of narcolepsy is not completely understood, current research points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors that influence the immune system.

Carson High's Future Health Professionals raise $350 for Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation

Carson High School HOSA: Future Health Professionals, presented a check Tuesday to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation. The club members raised and donated $350 to go toward breast cancer research/awareness by selling breast cancer awareness lanyards at $3 each in November.

Western Nevada College non-credit Community Education classes not only offer job skill preparation, they also help build life skills and provide help with personal health. Several classes are on tap this spring that will provide benefits to local residents.

Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion launches Boys and Girls Club Community Challenge

Mr. Dick Campagni, former Board Member and long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, is challenging the community to donate to the Club in support of the 3,000 children served each year in Carson City and Carson Valley.

Reno pet store to host inaugural adoption event with Nevada Humane Society

Carson High School student raises more than $1,000 for local cancer patients

Kimberly Parsons, a Carson High School senior and dedicated member of the Key Club, organized and implemented a fundraising campaign for area cancer patients as her senior project. In doing so, Parsons sold cancer awareness themed t-shirts, wristbands, and baked goods throughout the campaign, raising a total of $1,245.

Parsons presented a check to the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation in Carson City on Tuesday, generously donating proceeds to benefit area cancer patient support which is then distributed through the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

Nevada law firm Kaempfer Crowell will present a $3,500 donation on Friday to Honor Flight Nevada, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service and sacrifices. Rural Nevada programs awarded nearly $415,000 in state grants for tourism marketing

CARSON CITY, Nev. — A project to support air lift to Elko and another to create webisodes about Ely’s historical railway are among the 70 proposals approved for funding from the state’s Rural Grants Program, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday. The Nevada Commission on Tourism has authorized $414,854 in grants for programs and activities designed to deliver more tourists to rural Nevada.

Carson City Save Mart stores to match customer donations Friday to fight local hunger

This Friday, Dec. 12, Save Mart will match donations to Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local Feeding America-affiliated food bank, through their Holiday "Give. Share. Care" program, for a total dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $5,000 for the day.

This initiative could not come at a more critical time for local food banks. Already stretched heading into the holiday season, recent cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps) significantly dented the food budgets of thousands of local, low-income households.

DMV launches 'Share the Road' specialty license plate

CARSON CITY, Nev.– A specialty Nevada license plate supporting safe bicycle and pedestrian programs is now available for purchase through the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

The specialty plate displays a “Share the Road” message and bicycle and pedestrian image. The plates will cost an initial $61 and $30 for renewal. Proceeds of $25 per plate will provide grant money for non-profit and government organizations to plan and construct bicycle and pedestrian facilities, as well as support bicycle and pedestrian safety, education and other programs.
