Reno pet store to host inaugural adoption event with Nevada Humane Society
Nevada Humane Society has teamed up with another local business in support of helping homeless pets find loving homes — this time partnering with a pet store that, as of October, stopped selling puppies.
Pets R Us, a retail pet store located in the Meadowood Mall, will be hosting its first ever adoption event this Friday, January 16 from 12 Noon to 5pm. This event is the first of its kind since the business made the decision to end the sale of puppies in October.
“This is a big change and an important day for animals, as we take another step forward in this movement to make Northern Nevada an even better place for homeless pets and to help to put an end to puppy mills in Nevada and nationwide,” said Kimberly Wade, Senior Manager of Communications and Events for Nevada Humane Society. “Knowing we now have the support of another local pet store says a lot about our community, and we know this will help us save even more lives.”
Pets R Us owner Joe Young made the decision to end the sales of puppies after learning about the high numbers of homeless pets locally and the background of puppy mills. He is now working with Nevada Humane Society and Billy Howard of the Puppy Mill Free Reno organization to raise awareness for homeless pets. This change in business for Pets R Us brings the total of local pet stores selling puppies down to one.
A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. Unlike responsible breeders, who place the utmost importance on producing the healthiest puppies possible, breeding at puppy mills is performed without consideration of genetic quality. This results in generations of dogs with unchecked hereditary defects. Puppies are sold to pet shops and to the public directly.
The pet adoption event at Pets R Us will feature a small number of cats and dogs from Nevada Humane Society. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Pets will be available for adoption at Pets R Us twice this month, on January 16 and on January 30, both from 12 Noon to 5pm.
