Want to be a lawyer for a day? At CHS, with Mock Trial, it is possible. Mock Trial is Law and Order set in a simulated trial environment in a real courthouse with a real judge. The Carson High School Mock Trial team will meet professional attorneys and students around the state to compete Feb. 17 in Reno.

Organizers of the Carson City Fair are looking for volunteers and donors to help with this year’s event.

Diana Alonso, 17, a senior at Carson High School, fears adults may not fully understand what is happening in the lives of teens.

Book Perks:
— Anthropology in Native American culture.
— Various university contributions made by professors, graduates, and university texts in review.
— Consists of seven and a half notebooks full of notes; from quotes directly sourced from books on the subject of Bigfoot/Sasquatch, to quotes directly sourced from various university findings, many of which are drawn from Native American accounts that are pre-“Bigfoot” or “Sasquatch." This book has been successfully put-together with the “Fair Use Law” in mind.

The cast this year for the Carson City Vagina Monologues is small, but mighty. Eight women will take the stage to perform and raise money for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The show, which is in its fifth year in Carson City runs February 10 and 11 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

It is time for a great workout at Carson High School to both support its students and potentially win a race, not to mention avoid a heart attack.

The seventh annual Safe and Sober 2017 5K Run/Walk at the CHS track facility, presented by Carson High Safe Grad Booster, is set for Feb. 11.

Two days of performances with three shows in the mix will highlight Carson City Vagina Monologues 2017, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. and Feb. 11, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center.

Registration is open for the Northern Nevada Wildfire Awareness Multi-hour Trail Event hosted by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Living With Fire Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and Desert Sky Adventures. All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Coming in January are seven new courses offered by WNC Community Education in literature, art, drama and life-long learning. Linda Whitehill, Co-ordinator of Community Service and Continuing Education, announced the new offerings at WNC Carson campus to begin Friday, January 13. “We are delighted to add these unique courses to our program,” said Whitehill.

Snow showers Saturday turned to a brief period of frozen rain followed by light rain showers in Carson City.

The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Bridgeport Ranger District is now open for snowmobiling as of Dec. 23. Currently, the snow depth is approximately 24 inches deep throughout most of the BWRA, which meets the minimum requirement of 24 inches that is needed to open the area.

Nine additional Stand Tall team members from Yerington, Fernley, Dayton and Silver Springs, and two of HCC’s certified community health workers, Kathy McIntosh and Tammy Sutton, will also attend.

After collecting as many pottery bowls as possible throughout the year, the local Empty Bowls Project is holding its annual fundraiser Friday, Dec. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Carson City to deliver a blow to hunger in the community.

Douglas County and the State of Nevada are hosting an educational event to inform citizens on flood preparation and safety during Flood Awareness Week, Nov. 13-19, 2016. An active partnership with the Eagle Valley Children’s Home in North Carson City is helping the student leadership class at Pioneer High School learn about the challenges of living with disabilities. In fact, a recent visit motivated these local teens to get more involved to better understand the trials and difficulties people with severe disabilities go through on a daily basis.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received a $41,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to support the Sheriff’s Office participation in Joining Forces traffic safety campaigns during the coming year.

As we head toward Halloween on Monday we think about all the scary creatures often associated with the celebration. It’s easy to come up with scary thoughts about things that go bump in the dark, and unfortunately, a lot of people think of bats as that bump in the dark. You might be surprised, however, to learn that nearly everything you thought about bats is incorrect and they are actually extremely important to the success of Nevada’s ecosystems.

As Nevada looks to observe its statehood this weekend, the Washoe tribe is also planning a celebration of its heritage.

“The Washoe tribe has been here 18,000 to 25,000 years,” said Martin Montgomery, who is organizing the powwow through the Red Hoop Singers. “It’s all a collaboration of community.”

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Stormwater Program is reminding all Nevada students grades kindergarten through fifth of their chance to enter the “Love NV Waters” drawing contest going on now through Nov. 7.

Every high school athlete’s dream: to be named an All-American in their sport. To do this, one would have to participate in an organized All-American game.

For Carson High senior Peter Garrett, his soccer dreams are being lived in early December, when he will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, from the 1-4.
