YERINGTON, Nev. — As Lyon County continues to recover from the January and February flood events, agencies, leaders and department heads continue to plan for the upcoming spring and summer runoff and the subsequent flooding that is expected.

Librarians meet with Nevada lawmakers to petition funding

As the father of five kids, Sen. Mo Denis, D-Las Vegas, relied heavily on the Clark County library system.
“We would take our kids to lap sit at the library and leave with 30 books — for each child,” he recalled. “Our home was full of books. There’s no way we could have afforded that without the library. We also participated in musicals at the library. It’s just an integral part of my family.”

Community Change: The Art of Anti-Bullying unveiled by Pioneer High Leadership student

For my leadership class at Pioneer High School, I was given a project of community change. I chose bullying because this has been an issue that has affected me and most of the community at some point.

Our school was given several anti-bullying books from a grant and the Carson City Library collection known as the “Bully Free Zone,” for students to check out if they would like one.

NDOW: Wolf sighted in Northwestern Nevada

A wolf from the Shasta Pack in Northern California was spotted near Fox Mountain in northwestern Nevada in early November, 2016. Nevada Department of Wildlife personnel investigated the sighting after being alerted to a video recording of the apparent wolf.

Kick Butts Day targets Mills Park in Carson City

As part of national Kick Butts Day, Giselle Nava, 15, and other One Up members pick up discarded cigarette butts in Mills Park, in Carson City on Wednesday. The Partnership Carson City youth advocacy club gathered an estimated 3,500 butts in two hours Wednesday afternoon as part of the nationwide campaign to raise awareness about smoking dangers and cessation resources.

Swim lessons target autism at Carson City Aquatic Facility

Sam Chenin can't wait for his swim class to begin.

But this wasn't always the case, said his mother Sherri Chenin.

"We tried public lessons here when he was younger, before he was diagnosed, and he would be in the tot pool with two instructors and six kids," she said. "He would just let go and go under the water. He had no fear."
