Nevada Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with observance walks held statewide

Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with the 10th annual "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" observances held in Carson City, Dayton, Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon and nine communities statewide.

Nevada ranks 5th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Nevada and the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with one suicide occurring on average every 12.3 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Nevadans 15 to 34-year-olds, according to state health officials.

One of Carson High School’s own counselors, Nicki Hendee, along with CHS teacher Angila Golik and her honors government class, and a host of local businesses offering support, are collecting anything and everything to do with, of all things, diapers.

Nevada recycled art contest underway, submissions due Oct. 23

CARSON CITY, NV – The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling.

Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of an entry form and photos of artwork are due by October 23, 2016.

The historic building at 110 S. Curry Street, one of the oldest existing structures in the Nevada state capital, will soon have a new resident starting Sept. 3.

Nevada Humane Society Pet Files: Whose rubber duck will win the grand prize?

If you follow anything about us you know that right now is duck season. Not real ducks, but little, bright yellow, rubber ducks. 30,000 of them to be exact. Recently, they descended upon Reno and are now completing Duckie Boot Camp as they train for the big day — when they race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

On July 29, Nicholas Basalyga, co-founder of the non-profit In The Saddle, will get on his bike in San Francisco, CA. Two months later, he will arrive in Philadelphia. Carson City deputies looks for distracted drivers as part of July campaign

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada will be participating in Joining Forces through the remainder of July.

The focus of the event will be distracted drivers. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to “Keep your eyes on the road, and put away cell phones and other items that cause distractions.”

Tahoe homeowners association recognized by wildlife agency for 'Bear Logic' efforts

When Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed July as Bear Logic Month he challenged Nevadans to think like a bear.

“That is what Bear Logic is all about, thinking like a bear,” said Nevada Department of Wildlife black bear biologist Carl Lackey.
