A Weekend of Dangberg Family History

The weekend of July 23 and 24 the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park will feature two days of Dangberg family history with a Chautauqua on Fred Dangberg, Jr. and a presentation by his real life grandson Steve “Dink” Achard. Both presentations are free.

Billboards warn Carson City of cancer risk due to processed foods

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine — a nonprofit of 12,000 doctors — has placed two billboards warning Carson City residents that cancer-causing processed meats such as hot dogs don’t belong in school meals.

The 28th annual Nevada Writers Hall of Fame welcomes inductee, Ellen Hopkins, author of 11 bestselling novels, numerous stories and more than 20 children’s nonfiction titles. Mark Maynard, author of “Grind,” and Laura McBride, author of “We Are Called to Rise,” will be awarded with the 2015 Silver Pen.

Handful of Nevada Day venues switch up for statehood celebration in Carson City

Longtime Nevada Day parade-goers will see some changes to the traditional setup this year. The Beard Competition will move from the Legislative Plaza to the the parking lot of the old Citibank — 308 North Curry — during the celebration Oct. 31 in downtown Carson City.

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, Sept. 27-Oct. 3, 2015

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information.

Carson City Library will host a “Virtual Read-Out” during Banned Books Week, bringing together our community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Community Roots and the Dayton Farmers Market to Host Book Signing

Community Roots and The Dayton Farmers Market will host a book signing Thursday, August 13 during market hours of 3 – 6 pm with noted local authors Laura Tennant and Jack Folmar.

The authors’ new book, Images of America: Dayton is the first book written about the community in more than 50 years. The book traces the early days of Dayton, and captures the founding spirit of the community. Market goers can purchase a copy of the book and have it signed with all proceeds benefitting the Dayton Historical Society.

Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off

The Fourth Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex. Admission is free to the event, and all attendees receive a free ticket for a door prize drawing. Vintage cars, a cake walk, vendors offering all manner of gift items, household furnishings, and personal care items will be available, as well as a number of drawing prizes.

Local authors and artists will participate, and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, the Lake Tahoe Cancer League, and Christmas Cheer will be accepting donations.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all.
