The weekend of July 23 and 24 the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park will feature two days of Dangberg family history with a Chautauqua on Fred Dangberg, Jr. and a presentation by his real life grandson Steve “Dink” Achard. Both presentations are free.

The weather may be cooler, but the chili is hot. Head to Glen Eagles for the final day of the Chili competition. Enjoy a picnic and a free concert in Genoa: the Sagebrush Rebellion performs at 5 p.m. If you’re dreaming of snow, then the lecture on legendary Tahoe winters might just get you through the day.

Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Head to Mills Park for the First Annual Polynesian Festival in the Marv Teixeira Pavillion. Glen Eagles welcomes back the Regional Chili Cook-off this weekend; get your fill of some amazing grub and help raise funds for Honor Flight Nevada. Happy Fathers’ Day Carson City. The Reno Rodeo is a great way to spend the day with your progeny. The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

SUNDAY:

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Authors Wanda and Richard Canton will speak on their book, Bodie Railway & Lumber Company: Railroad in the Sky 1881–1917, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, June 19, at 10:00 am.

Carson City’s most impassioned TEDx enthusiasts will come together on Friday for a day of information, inspiration, networking and dialogue around the theme Creating the community you want to live in.

The event will take place at Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater and will feature an incredible line-up of speakers on topics ranging from innovations and ideas to health to technology and the arts. Attendees will also have an opportunity to network at an on-site lunch event.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine — a nonprofit of 12,000 doctors — has placed two billboards warning Carson City residents that cancer-causing processed meats such as hot dogs don’t belong in school meals.

Who are the people in your neighborhood? Head to the Carson City Downtown Business Association’s monthly wine walk and you’ll be surprised at how many of them you’ll find.

Whether they are helping pour wine, showing off their shop, or a bundled up part of the crowd, it’s one event that brings everyone together. Rain, snow, or shine the wine walk showcases our historic downtown and the great restaurants, shops, services, and watering holes to be found there.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? The weather should hold up on Saturday, but no promises on Sunday. Hit the slopes if you are so inclined, several Tahoe resorts have opened for the season. The event will be Oct. 3 at the Brewery Arts Center and will feature a full day of multimedia presentations of documentary and creative railroad photography and fellowship.

Hungry, Carson City? Grab some fruits or veggie at the Farmers Market in Carson Tahoe Hospital’s parking lot. Or grab lunch with the Chamber of Commerce; speaker John Ralston joins them this month. Grab a burger or hot dog at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s weekly luncheon and learn more about what this neat club does. Longtime Nevada Day parade-goers will see some changes to the traditional setup this year. The Beard Competition will move from the Legislative Plaza to the the parking lot of the old Citibank — 308 North Curry — during the celebration Oct. 31 in downtown Carson City.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information.

Carson City Library will host a “Virtual Read-Out” during Banned Books Week, bringing together our community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:

• Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
• Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

Community Roots and The Dayton Farmers Market will host a book signing Thursday, August 13 during market hours of 3 – 6 pm with noted local authors Laura Tennant and Jack Folmar.

The authors’ new book, Images of America: Dayton is the first book written about the community in more than 50 years. The book traces the early days of Dayton, and captures the founding spirit of the community. Market goers can purchase a copy of the book and have it signed with all proceeds benefitting the Dayton Historical Society.

The Fourth Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex. Admission is free to the event, and all attendees receive a free ticket for a door prize drawing. Vintage cars, a cake walk, vendors offering all manner of gift items, household furnishings, and personal care items will be available, as well as a number of drawing prizes.

Local authors and artists will participate, and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, the Lake Tahoe Cancer League, and Christmas Cheer will be accepting donations.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with. Keep reading for enough fun to make your head spin!
