The Douglas County Sheriff's Office sergeant who was injured in a Dec. 20 shooting is returning to his Carson City home from the hospital today, Tuesday with a full law enforcement escort.
Family, friends and colleagues of DCSO Sgt. John Lenz invite the community to participate in a welcome home wave as part of the motorcade. The escort is a coordinated effort of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Sparks Police, Reno Police, and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. DCSO will lead in the escort.
Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers urge those who would like to participate to gather and park at Glen Eagles Restaurant and Lounge, 3700 N. Carson St. Well wishers can then stand along North Carson Street in front of the restaurant and wave as the escort moves along southbound.
Those who are welcoming the sergeant home should gather at the restaurant at around noon. Friends and family are encouraging people to bring flags and signs. At the time of this writing, organizers said the escort should pass on North Carson Street after exiting I-580 on North Carson Street between noon and 12:30 p.m. before turning westbound onto College Parkway.
The family of Sergeant John Lenz welcomes all to show support. The Douglas County Sheriff’s officers who responded to the incident on December 20 will lead the escort.
“We are so grateful of the quality care he received from Renown, we’re glad he’s coming home to be with his family and take time to heal,” said Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley.
According to Sheriff Furlong, while Sergeant Lenz’s injuries were significantly critical, a horrific tragedy was averted when his fellow Deputies rescued him and transported him to receive immediate medical care. “His return home before we close out the year is a great gift,” said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
As a reminder from Carson City Health and Human Services, please exercise caution for any social gathering to limit the spread of COVID-19, if you are feeling sick stay home, wear face coverings, wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.
Sgt. Lenz was injured in a Dec. 20 shooting in Gardnerville in which he was shot three times. Body armor protected him from two bullets to the chest. He was, however struck in the face and seriously injured and has been recovering. The suspect was arrested and faces attempted murder charges.
