The Douglas County Sheriff's Office sergeant who was injured in a Dec. 20 shooting is returning to his Carson City home from the hospital today, Tuesday with a full law enforcement escort.

As COVID-19 cases soar in Northern Nevada and local and regional hospitals are reaching capacity, Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City is making changes to adapt to the surge of cases.

Like the rest of Northern Nevada, the nation, and the world, Carson Tahoe has spent the last 8-10 months planning. Planning to be prepared in a crisis so we can still take care of our community; planning to persevere; planning to help one another.

Now – we’re in it.

With the anticipation of students and employees once again physically going back to school in Carson City this week, the Carson City School District has provided a guide for parents to use to perform health and wellness screenings of their students before they step on a school bus or enter a school campus each day.

Lawmakers ended the second special session of the summer shortly after midnight on Wednesday after passing a heavily lobbied bill that shields many businesses from COVID-19-related lawsuits but ultimately exempted school districts, hospitals and other health care facilities from receiving the additional protections.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, new forms of healthcare technology emerged allowing patients to continue to access care during the crisis. Telehealth skyrocketed in popularity, allowing many people to visit with their provider via a phone call or a video conference appointment.

Northern Nevada general contractor, Shaheen Beauchamp Builders LLC, has received the 2019 Summit Award for Re-Development of the Year for the Renown Urgent Care project in Carson City.

Tens of thousands of Nevada small businesses and organizations — from casinos and law firms to churches and even strip clubs — received at least $3.1 billion through the Paycheck Protection Program stimulus package, according to a massive disclosure made by the federal government.

Since launching a statewide testing initiative in May, the Nevada Department of Corrections has tested 10,329 offenders for COVID-19, or 83 percent of its total population of 12,368. Of those tested, only nine — or .08 percent of all offenders — have tested positive for the virus, one of the lowest rates in the nation.

There was a stabbing of a male offender this morning at Warm Springs Correctional Center. Carson City emergency services was contacted via 911 and responded to WSCC at 9:40 am. A medical helicopter arrived, and left at 10:10 a.m. to transport the offender to a local hospital to receive medical care. WSCC's warden was notified by telephone. The incident is under investigation.

Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe is reopening over the Memorial Day weekend and having a four-day locals-emphasis celebration after being closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event has been scaled back from previous years as city and state officials grapple with phase 2 reopening, which allows second-home property owners living outside the area to return to the California side of South Lake Tahoe, but not allowing for non-essential travel and visitors.

With COVID-19 keeping most of us home these days, otherwise healthy patients are being forced to make some tougher than usual decisions regarding their medical and musculoskeletal healthcare, including orthopedic, sports medicine and podiatric care.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began assessments earlier this month in Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City for potential hospital space expansion in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid calls and emergency directives designed to “flatten the curve” and prepare Nevada’s beleaguered health care system for an expected surge in COVID-19 cases, state leaders are still preparing for the worst.

Yesterday Central Lyon County Fire Department responded to the Sutro Tunnel area for reports of an ATV accident. Crews were able to get all four occupants out to safety where they all received medical care.

On Thursday, a sobering post began circulating through social media. Abby, a Carson City resident, believes she has COVID-19, and her doctor told her she is presumed to have it. However, because of a lack of tests available, she and many others like her are unable to be tested for the rapidly-spreading, potentially fatal virus.

When there is heightened concern around an illness, Carson Tahoe closely monitors the situation and implements enhanced infection prevention strategies, working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local health districts, and other local healthcare providers. In response to the recent declaration of a ‘National State of Emergency’ surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, and in following the CDC’s recommendations for social distancing, we have decided to take additional precautionary measures to reduce the risk of contracting/spreading seasonal illnesses.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public and Behavioral Health has announced that it will begin posting statewide updates on the COVID-19 situation in Nevada on a weekly basis.

The University of Nevada, Reno Student Outreach Clinic will be hosting a Rural Outreach Clinic in Silver Springs this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Screenings and exams include blood pressure and hypertension checks, diabetes screenings, wellness exams, clinical evaluations, as well as child influenza vaccinations.

A Carson City family estate presented checks to three organizations on Wednesday amounting to more than $600,000.

In the spirit of giving and the Christmas holidays ahead, three organizations will receive generous donations amounting to more than $500,000 in memory of Frances M. Parker, a longtime Carson City resident and former owner of the Crossroads Lounge.

CARSON CITY — Nevada health officials will use a federal grant recently awarded to the state’s Medicaid program to grow Substance Use Disorder services.

When Joe Tummarello moved into a sober living home in Carson City called Lyfe Recovery, his friends and family thought he was doing well. However, at the end of July, he wound up in the hospital after his health declined rapidly. His family says this was due to severe neglect at the hands of the owner and manager of the facility. By several accounts, he was denied medical treatment until a senior living home provider stepped in and took him to the hospital, where he died a week later.

The question is: did Joe Tummarello die before his time? And if the answer is yes, then is someone responsible for his demise?

In last week’s column, I showed things really are much better now than in the past and said this week I’d provide some reasons for hope in the future.
