Cold weather ahead for Carson City and the Sierra through New Year's Day
A strong cold front will push through the Sierra and northwest Nevada Monday night into Tuesday with overnight lows in the single digits at night to Carson City and Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service. Snow showers could develop along the front, but confidence among forecasters remains low.
Carson City will see a brief warmup Sunday with a high of 45 before temperatures drop below 40 and into the 20s for daytime highs and low teens and single digits at night through Friday. See the forecast here.
Gusty northeast winds will develop behind the front Tuesday into Wednesday bringing strong winds across Sierra ridges with winds gusting over 80 mph. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are possible on Lake Tahoe bringing choppy lake conditions.
These winds will make the already cold temperatures feel even colder with wind chills in the teens during the day and single digit to below zero at night Tuesday into New Year’s Eve. The graphic above shows potential wind chill values New Year’s Eve at midnight based on the current forecast.
