Carson City sheriff’s log: Pair steal pies, driver allegedly tries to run over grocery manager

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday morning on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly attempting to hit a grocery store manager with his vehicle in a parking lot after he and an accomplice stole two pies, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Marcelo Escareno Fountas was booked into custody at 12:34 a.m. He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended registration and driving without a valid driver’s license. An 18-year-old woman was also arrested and charged with misdemeanor petit larceny. The store manager was not hurt in the incident.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the Smith’s grocery store in the 500 block of East William Street. Dispatch advised the suspects attempted to hit the store manager with their vehicle while they were attempting to leave. The manager told dispatch the suspects left in a white Subaru.

Deputies located the vehicle going eastbound on Long Street and made a traffic stop, contacting the driver, Fountas, and the female passenger. The deputy advised the two of their Miranda rights and asked them if they wanted to speak about the incident at the grocery store, the arrest report states.

Both advised they went into the store, grabbed two pies and left without paying for them. The deputy asked the two what happened when they attempted to leave. Both stated the store employee followed them to their car and advised them he was getting their license plate number and calling the sheriff’s office.

The deputy asked Fountas to explain what he did next. The man said he put the car into reverse and took off. The deputy asked if he attempted to run over the store employee. The man replied “no,” the report states.

Officers then made contact with the store manager who advised he was standing at the rear of the vehicle attempting to obtain the license plate number when Fountas put the vehicle into reverse and attempted to hit him.

The deputy asked the manager if he believed Fountas knew he was standing behind the vehicle. The manager said “yes” because he and the suspect were exchanging words, the report states. The manager said the suspect could have gone forward but chose to back up in an attempt to hit him.

The manager advised he wanted both arrested. Officers took the pair into custody. While searching Fountas, officers located a clear glass pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine, in his upper left front jacket pocket. Bail for Fountas: $21,578. Bail for the 18-year-old woman, $352.
