Dayton Food Pantry makes plea for Thanksgiving turkey donors
With an unemployment rate of nearly 20 percent in Lyon County, the Dayton Food Pantry has seen a big jump in requests for Thanksgiving food baskets and is asking the community for help.
Food Pantry Director Freida Carbery reports that while many individuals and groups have donated turkeys and trimmings, there are already 100 families in need on the Pantry list, and only 40 turkeys in the freezer. The Pantry's list of those in need doesn’t even include the numbers of families she expects to receive from the local schools this week.
Turkey Donations Drop Off This Weekend: Local families are in need of turkeys and chickens to make their Thanksgiving meals complete, and Food Pantry volunteers will be ready to accept all donations starting Friday Nov 19th from 10 am until 4pm. They’ll also stay open Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 3pm (for donations only) With the help of local businesses like Dayton Valley Golf Club and Dayton Valley Floral, they have plenty of storage.
Carbery thanked church groups such as St. Ann’s and Well of Worship for their turkey dinner donations, and thanked Rita Mackie and the employees of Health Care Financing Policy for a large donation of turkeys, Curves for ongoing support, The Dayton Dollar Tree for a large donation of side dishes such as yams, and Dayton Kiwanis for baskets and trimmings to go with turkeys donated by Dalos Graf.
She also thanked all the local schools for their food drives for Thanksgiving trimmings, such as rice and stuffing. When the donations from the community are put together with those from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Carbery hopes to be able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to all the families who need them.
Turkey Basket Distribution: On Monday, Nov. 22 and Tues. Nov. 23 volunteers will work all day to put together the Thanksgiving dinner baskets and will call each family on the list as the baskets are prepared and ready to go. Carbery said she’s prepared to stay at the pantry until 6pm on Wed. Nov. 24 so that families have a chance to pick up their baskets in time to prepare a hot meal together on Thanksgiving.
Where: The Dayton Food Pantry is located at the corner of 4 Enterprise Way and Hwy 50. Families can still sign up for a basket through 4 pm this Thursday. Please call the pantry at (775) 246-7834 for more information.
