Classy Seconds cuts ribbon on new facility in East Carson City
Two decades of searching and planning came to an end Thursday night for Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV), a Carson City-based 501(c)3 registered non-profit whose story goes back nearly 40 years.
The grand opening ribbon was cut to the brand-new 14,000 square foot thrift store by AEDV Executive Director Lisa Lee as dozens of guests from the community celebrated along side of her.
"We're excited, because we rented the same place for 20 years," Lee said. "There's nothing like home ownership."
Owning its own property means AEDV will be more independent and less reliant on grant funds to pay for needs that arise, Lee said.
More than half of the non-profit's revenue is self-generating, Lee said, between the sales at Classy Seconds Thrift Store and the annual Taste of Downtown, a summertime food-tasting extravaganza that draws thousands to the area.
"This gives us unrestricted revenue, so that we can fill the holes in our budget," Lee said. "We can expand and do things whenever there is a need."
Since 1979, AEDV has extended its hand in aid to victims of domestic violence, supplying them with food, clothing and shelter. Classy Seconds opened in 1997 to serve as both a thrift resource for its client base and a revenue generator for the organization.
AEDV now operates a 51-bed shelter for domestic violence victims. Lee said the need for more space has always been an issue for the local non-profit.
She said the new facility, located at 3590 Gordon Street right off U.S. Highway 50 East, meets the organization's immediate needs and is expected to fulfill its future goals for expansion.
"It's ours, we can do what we want with it," Lee said. "This can meet our needs now and in the future.
The new Classy Seconds Thrift Store opens to the public this Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
