20 Years in the Making: Carson City's new Classy Seconds thrift store opens Saturday
After 20 years in the making, Advocates to End Domestic Violence will open its new 14,000 square foot Classy Seconds Thrift shop operation this Saturday, Nov. 11.
The shop is located at 3590 Gordon St. Carson Cit just off of Highway 50 and will open at 9 a.m. The new facility was built from the ground up, on property recently acquired by Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The organization has been saving and planning for this new facility since 1997.
“We opened Classy Seconds in 1997, so we could have clothing and housewares for clients in need as well as unrestricted revenue for program services,” said Lisa Lee, AEDV director. “We have been dutifully pinching our pennies and working hard to raise these funds to be able to own our own building and are grateful for the support we have had from the community these many years. Community support is imperative!”
Long term plans for the newly purchased plot of land include the construction of more buildings. In addition to Classy Seconds, AEDV plans to build their offices and has considered moving their shelter to the property as well.
“It’s about growth,” said Lee. “It’s unfortunate that the need for our services continues to grow, but we are here for the community and ready to serve our mission. Owning our own land and buildings, means we won’t have to cap our growth, and we can adapt to be what the community needs.”
AEDV was founded in 1979 when the community saw a need for a domestic violence program in Carson City, Nevada. Since then they have grown from a small two-bedroom apartment, to a full-service program that operates a 51-bed shelter and provides a wide variety of services designed to protect and support victims and their children in the community.
