Sex offender status sweep makes 96 contacts in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas County
A joint law enforcement operation to check on the status of sex offenders in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties was conducted the last week of October that resulted in 96 offender personal contacts and a total of 122 community personal contacts, authorities said.
Known as "Operation Trick or Treat / Scarecrow" the multi-agency effort was conducted between Oct. 26 to Oct. 31. Checks verified sex offender status, intensive and general supervision and offender compliance. It involved 17 officers with area law enforcement agencies who knocked on doors and made contact with community members to carry out the operation. There were no arrests.
Agencies involved were the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Division of Parole and Probation in collaboration with the United States Marshals Service, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
"The purpose of the operation was to ensure children did not become victims of sexual predators during Halloween, said Lt. Jorge Pierrott of Nevada Parole and Probation, Northern Command. "Officers gave specific direction in advance to supervised sex offenders limiting their activities during Halloween. This included not allowing sex offenders to give out candy, discouraging them from having Halloween decorations or participating in any activity which could potentially lure children to or near their residence."
Officers also identified intensive supervision and general supervision offenders who were identified as potentially being high risk and in need of personal contacts, he said.
"The multi-agency collaboration is identified as a great success for increasing offender supervision and offender compliance and serves as an example of how federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies work together to increase community safety in Northern Nevada," said Pierrott.
