Carson City weather: Storm to bring wind, rain and snow to region through the weekend

A storm will move into the Carson City region this weekend bringing wind, rain and a chance of snow in the foothills and up to 3 feet in higher elevations, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Basin.
Rain will spread into western Nevada at times beginning late Friday, with anywhere from a quarter to a half-inch for the valleys and higher amounts in the foothills. Snow levels could lower with the weather system, with up to an inch of snow possible in the foothills above Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno and a few inches for the Virginia Highlands and Virginia City, according to the weather service.
Gusty winds will move into the Carson City region Friday and Saturday ranging from 35-55 mph, impacting lower elevations and making travel difficult along US-395 Friday into Saturday. Winds are also likely to cause turbulence and wind shear for aviation. While it will be windy, this is not a major wind event in the context of what the region can get, according to the weather service.
Snow levels may lower through the weekend and may fall as low as 4500-5500 feet on Sunday with light precipitation possibly continuing, according to the weather service.
For the Sierra, periods of rain/snow and difficult travel conditions to the Sierra passes Friday-Sunday. Accumulations of 1-2 feet, locally up to 3 feet, are likely in the Sierra, including Mono County, above 7,500 feet. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the region.
Temperatures will be below normal, with freezing temperatures by Monday morning in the valleys. All winter preparations should be complete before this weekend including cleaning leaves from gutters and storm drains and winterizing sprinkler systems.
