Senator Square: CHS students work alongside medical professionals at RAM event

Last weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.

The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

These students were very well received and showed their professionalism the entire weekend. They earned many compliments about how professional they were and how knowledgeable they were from the RAM officials, local community members, and professional staff at the event. Carson High School is very proud of our students and the way they represented Carson High School.

NJROTC Competes
In preparation and training for the all Navy Orienteering Meet in Tacoma, Wash., Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015 the Carson High School NJROTC Orienteering team held their first in house Orienteering Meet at Spooner Lake State Park. Orienteering is a land navigation sport where individuals use a topographic map and compass to navigate from point to point, the winner finishes in the least amount of time. Although the sport can be done by teams, it is an individual sport; this means the individual may be out in the wilderness alone for several hours, requiring the individual to be very confident in his or her land navigation skills. Courses are made at several levels.

The participants’ level of experience is matched to the level of the course. Although the majority of the cadets who competed were freshmen, the course set on Sunday was at the mid-level range. A total of 18 cadets participated, 15 of which were freshmen. The following are the top 5 finishers: 1st Place – Kyle Kettn (9th Grade) time 1:28:19, 2nd Place – Dylan Velez (11th Grade) time 1:36:11, 3rd Place – Chris Berggren (10th Grade/Team Captain) 1:45:21, 4th Place – Michael Johnson-Thiess (9th Grade) time 1:45:29, and 5th Place Kenneth Bogle (9th Grade) 1:46:35.

FFA News
On Friday, October 16, students from Carson and Douglas High School teamed up with the Carson Water Subconservancy Agency for the annual Carson Watershed SnapShot Day. Every year on the same day the Carson River is tested at various locations. The students volunteered at the east fork of the river outside Markleville, CA. Michelle Harrison, Jose Cazares, Meghan Harrison, Cristian Lamas, Cameron Rudy, and Belen Silva collected water samples for water quality testing, took water and air temperatures, and surveyed the riverbed for possible sources of pollution. Because of the positive and educational experience provided to these students, the Capitol FFA Chapter hopes to SnapShot day an annual field trip. (Michelle Harrison, Capitol FFA Reporter.)

Speech and Debate News
Carson Speech and Debate competed at the Fallon league tournament weekend. For speech events Evan Cherpeski placed 6th in novice extemporaneous speaking. Scarlett Baeza placed 6th in novice storytelling for her piece on struggling on the loss of a family member. Sawyer Barnett and Bailee Barber placed 3rd in senior duo with their piece on friendship and romance.

Juliet Favero and Shane Morton took first in senior duo interpretation with their cutting of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. In debate events Sandro Figueroa placed 10th in speaker points for PF, and Baliee Barber placed 2nd place overall in speaker points Lincoln Douglas. Shane Morton acted as the presiding officer of Congressional Debate in his chamber. Evan Cherpeski won novice Lincoln Douglas Debate going undefeated on the topic of whether teens ought to have the right to make autonomous medical decision. He now advances to senior division. Debate continues their active fall participating in the Tedx competition, Poetry Out Loud, and the American Legion speaking competition in addition to the next tournament at Spanish Springs.

Winter Sports Signups
Winter sport signups deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 5. Sports packets must be completed online for new athletes, returning athletes from this fall must complete a Returning Athlete Form. All athletes must be cleared from the Library and Student Finance before turning in paperwork to the athletic office. Failure to do this will delay clearance of the athlete. Contact Kathy Taylor in the athletic office for information.

Bowling Team Meeting
The CHS Bowling Team will have a meeting at lunch on Thursday, October 29th in room 231, Mrs. Mannschreck's classroom. 
 
Student of the Week
This week’s student of the week is Tim Kelley. Tim is a hard-working and dedicated student. Tim has been volunteering his time after school to help tutor students. He is a reliable, kind, and humble person. Thanks for all you do at Carson High Tim!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior spotlight is on Terek Been. Terek has a weighted GPA of 4.5 and is completing his high school career with a full load of AP and honors classes. Terek is not only an exemplary student, but is also very involved in our school as well as the Carson City community.

As a member and officer of the Key Club, Terek has helped plan and has participated in numerous community volunteer projects including Food for Thought and the Carson River clean-up. He is a member of the Judicial Board, the National Honor Society, and the Climbing Club. Terek has devoted numerous hours to insuring that these clubs run smoothly and has spent many, many hours planning and carrying out the activities these clubs sponsor.

Of particular note is Terek’s involvement in YIELD (Youth Influencing Everyday Life Decisions). This group plans and carries out events to make youth aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. He has been a member for the last three years.

Terek’s plans for next year are still being formulated, but he will apply to UNR, Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Boston University, and Cornell University, where he hopes to pursue a major in a pre-medical field. Terek is an exceptional young man and we look forward to his future accomplishments.
