Downtown Carson City shops open for Friday 'Passport' celebration
Downtown Carson City businesses will once again open their doors for the second annual Passport to Downtown on Friday.
“It was so well attended and enjoyed by the participants last year that the Downtown Business Association decided to do it again,” said Kyle Horvath, the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority to the DBA. “It’s essentially an open house for the downtown corridor.”
The original event was planned last year as a celebration of the completion of the construction on Carson Street through downtown. Horvath said there are new things to celebrate this year.
“Our downtown has changed so rapidly in the last two years, with new businesses moving in and redevelopment of vacant buildings,” he said. “This is a way for people to refamiliarize themselves with the way downtown is progressing. It’s really an opportunity to celebrate the core of the city.”
Participants can pick up a passport booklet at any downtown business. Passports will be redeemed at the headquarters set up in McFadden Plaza.
“People are encouraged to walk from business to business to get their passports stamped,” Horvath explained. “Each stamp equates to a raffle ticket.”
Raffle prizes include bikes, vacations, products from local businesses and more. There will also be a Kid Zone with petting zoo, buskers and a live broadcast from KOZZ radio station.
The event will run 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on the Nevada Day holiday, the day before the Nevada Day parade. There is no cost to participate.
“These are your neighbors and friends,” Horvath said. “Nevada Day is such a reunion. This is a way to start the feel of Nevada Day one day early.”
