Carson City man to be made an Honorary Marine in rare recognition by the U.S. Marine Corps
Carson City resident Nick Campbell, a courageous young man who has battled cancer and is now in end-stage liver failure, will soon be recognized with one of the highest civilian honors from the United States Marine Corps.
In an extraordinary decision that required approval from the Pentagon, Nick will be awarded the title of Honorary Marine, a recognition granted to only a select few, and Nick has this honor because he has truly fought this fight like a soldier.
The presentation will be made by Marines based out of Sacramento, and representatives from Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s office will also be in attendance to show their support and honor Nick’s journey.
Nick, who has been fighting cancer for several years, has always demonstrated remarkable strength, perseverance, and dedication. Though his illness prevented him from completing the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program at Carson High School, his passion for service and his fighting spirit has not gone unnoticed. The Honorary Marine title recognizes Nick’s courageous spirit and aligns with the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment.
"We are so proud of Nick and being able to watch him fight so courageously has been an honor,” said Susan Sorenson, Executive Director of the Northern Nevada Dream Center "Being named an Honorary Marine is a testament to his strength and determination, and we are deeply grateful to the Marine Corps for recognizing him in this way."
This prestigious award comes at a pivotal moment in Nick’s journey, as his health continues to decline. It has brought immense pride to both Nick and his mother, Frankie, who has been by his side throughout his battle, bearing the heavy financial and emotional burden of his care.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with medical expenses and end-of-life care. The family is asking for continued support from the community, as every donation will help ease their burden.
