Applications for State Senate to be accepted from Oct. 22-28 from Carson City, Washoe residents

The Carson City Board of Supervisors and the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners will appoint a resident of Senate District 16 to fill the Senate seat vacated by the resignation of Senator Ben Kieckhefer earlier this month.

As required by state law, an appointee to the vacant Senate seat must:
(1) be a qualified elector;
(2) currently reside in the Senate District and have lived there as of September 29, 2021;
(3) have been an actual, as opposed to constructive, citizen resident of Nevada for 1 year preceding the date of appointment;
(4) be a registered member of the same political party as the outgoing Senator (Republican);
(5) be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment; and
(6) meet all other qualifications for the office as required by the Nevada Constitution and state law.

The application period for consideration opens at 9:00 a.m. on October 22, 2021 and closes at 12:00 p.m. on October 28, 2021. An application can be found at the link here. Applications will not be accepted outside of the application period.

Applications can be emailed to SD16application@washoecounty.gov or delivered in person during regular business hours to the Washoe County Administrative Complex, County Manager’s Office, 1001 East 9th Street, Reno.

Because Senate District 16 spans two counties, both the Carson City Board of Supervisors and the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners must decide on a single appointment.

Carson City Supervisors will interview applicants and select a single candidate to nominate at its meeting on November 4, 2021 and the Washoe County Commissioners will meet on November 9, 2021 to do the same.

The two county boards will meet jointly on November 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. to make the final appointment to fill the vacancy.

This process must be conducted immediately because the Nevada Legislature is expected to convene a Special Session this year to determine redistricting based on the results of the 2020 U.S. Census.

Any person who is interested in applying can check his or her district by entering a home address on the Nevada Legislature’s “Who’s My Legislator” website.
