Dayton man identified in fatal Highway 50 crash Monday
Reno Police Department has released the name of the victim who died in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near Dayton that involved an on-duty Nevada Highway Patrol trooper.
Jack Charles Mynear, 75, of Dayton died from injuries in the head-on crash that happened five miles east of Dayton, said RPD Sgt. Alan Hollingsworth. The NHP trooper sustained moderate injuries and remains hospitalized as of Wednesday.
Mynear was the driver of the BMW involved and died on scene, said Hollingsworth.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office requested the Reno Police Department to conduct the crash investigation since a Nevada Highway Patrol officer was involved. The law requires outside agencies to do investigations when law enforcement is involved.
The preliminary investigation has found that a 1999 BMW sedan was traveling east on Highway 50 about 5 miles east of Dayton when it crossed over the center median, began traveling eastbound in the westbound shoulder, and struck head-on a marked NHP vehicle which was parked in the westbound shoulder. Witnesses reported the BMW was exhibiting erratic driving behavior just prior to the crash.
Alcohol may be a factor in the crash, said Hollingsworth. The investigation in ongoing.
