Artists readying for statewide art show in Carson City ahead of Nevada Day Parade

As a highlight for the upcoming statewide art show, Capital Collage, Mark Salinas commissioned Las Vegas papier mache artist Justin Favela to create three, alien-themed piñatas. However, the piñatas won’t just be on display, they will be broken in traditional custom during the art show.
“It adds another dimension to the participation element for the audience,” said Salinas, Carson City arts and culture director. “And it’s just fun. It’s a celebration, a celebration of the Hispanic culture and of the arts.”
More than 20 artists and organizations will be featured in the one-night-only curated art show, which will be followed by the 79th annual Nevada Day parade on Oct. 28. The theme of this year’s parade is Arts and Entertainment.
“This is almost like a rally for the parade the next day,” Salinas said. “It is a complete immersion in the arts. If the Nevada Day Parade is a celebration of its statehood, this event is a celebration of its humanity.”
The show, which will run 7-11 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, will feature all types and styles of art, including aerialists, illustrators, American Indian dancers, along with food and drinks.
“This isn’t your typical art show with white walls,” Salinas said. “It’s more than just looking at art, you’ll be experiencing it — feeling it, seeing it, listening to it, tasting it. It will engage all of the senses.”
Will Roger Peterson, a Burning Man founder and parade dignitary, will be attending the show, along with other founders including parade marshal Michael Mikel.
“Public Art in Nevada is a creative collaboration of and for the community that expresses and celebrates our First Amendment rights,” Peterson said. “Art in public places creates a space for citizens to gather and interact with the power and beauty of the creative intention.”
Guests will also be able to mingle with the artists, who represent all areas of the state.
The show will include a silent auction with prizes such as an Eric Vozzola print, which will be the featured artwork on the admission bracelets. Talia Koval, a South Lake Tahoe artist, will be live painting the event. The finished product will be auctioned off.
A piece of jewelry from Kate Raudenbush will also be included in the auction. Her sculpture, “Guardian of Eden” is displayed in front of the Nevada Museum of Art. It is the first piece of Burning Man Art ever purchased by a museum.
Raffle prizes will include a paranormal stay and play package in Eureka, a Dine and Dip for two at Wally’s Hot Springs, a gift basket containing a silver coin from the Nevada State Museum and more.
Proceeds from the show will serve as a fundraiser to raise money for public art programming in Carson City.
