Lake Tahoe bikeway photo by NDOT wins national competition
A photograph illustrating transportation efforts on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe has been selected as a winner in a national photo competition by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
Nevada Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Julie Duewel’s photo showing Lake Tahoe’s Stateline to Stateline Bikeway won the “Road Less Traveled” category of the Faces of Transportation competition. The photo was taken during a June dedication ceremony for the second segment of the Nevada Stateline to Stateline Bikeway.
The 1.2-mile shared-use bike path connects Elks Point Road and Nevada Beach with Round Hill Pines Resort on the Nevada side. This new stretch adds to the existing one-mile segment of path completed in 2012 for a total of 2.2 miles and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort. NDOT is one of many partners of this project which is headed up by the Tahoe Transportation District. The bikeway will ultimately connect existing and build new bicycle and walking facilities encircling Lake Tahoe to create “America’s Most Beautiful Bikeway.”
“Nevada’s transportation system is vital to both our way of life and our economy,” NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon explained. “We’re proud to be able to work with our partner agencies, stakeholders and the public to provide for not just roads, but other important modes of transportation that can contribute so much to Nevada’s quality of life, mobility and economic diversity. I believe Julie’s photo truly captures the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the importance of alternative transportation in support of tourism and recreation.”
Nearly 90 photos from 17 state departments of transportation were entered into the national competition in various categories. Duewel has won the competition in previous years, including a win for best overall photo. Photos from this year’s competition are available to view at www.facesoftransportation.org.
