Fall festivities abound at Fallon area farm

October is an exciting time in Fallon with the onset of fall and the area’s farms celebrating the changing of seasons.
At Lattin Farms, fifth generation farmers Rick and B. Ann Lattin invite the public to enjoy the annual Fall Festival, bringing the rural Nevada town to life every Saturday throughout the month.
Enjoy all that the Fallon-area farm has to offer with a quick trip one hour east of Reno and getaway before the holidays by enjoying some of northern Nevada’s best organic eats, getting lost in the corn maze, making your very own scarecrow and letting the kids get up close and personal with some friendly farm animals.
Enjoy a leisurely walk or compete with friends and family to see who can finish first in Lattin Farms’ corn maze, known as one of America’s largest. Upon entry, guests are given a list of questions to take into the maze where answers can be found at various points. Each year the maze is designed into an image that can be seen from above with past designs including an Ichthyosaur, Nevada’s state fossil, and fruits and vegetables spelling out “Know Your Farmer Know Your Food.” This year’s design is unveiled at the October 5 opening.
After completing the maze, take a hayride over to the pumpkin patch. While the kids meticulously scour the patch for the perfect jack-o-lantern, adults can select some savory sugar pumpkins, perfect for creating favorite fall and winter recipes.
The cow train is a big hit among the little ones and personal seats in hand-painted barrels make this ride a must-do. Not far away is Critterville. This area has fuzzy four-legged friends to feed and pet. Watch where you put those treats though – goats love to nibble on pockets filled with candy corn. The bounce house awaits after the petting zoo and face painting pleases kids of all ages.
Adults can bring out that inner child at the Scarecrow Factory by building life-size scarecrows ideal for outdoor décor. Get creative and replicate a loved one or famous actor or take a shot at creating a stuffed self-portrait. The result may not be effective at keeping birds away but it will be fun to make and take home.
All that activity sure does work up an appetite and Lattin Farms has got that covered too. With some of the area’s best produce, it’s a great place to shop for organic ingredients including raspberries, tomatoes, garlic, onions and squash. Or, if you’re ready to hit the road after a fun-filled day of fall-themed activities, downtown Fallon offers plenty of ways to fill your plate before heading home.
The Slanted Porch, owned by renowned chef Steve Hernandez, boasts its very own hoop house where seasonal produce is grown and used daily in the kitchen. Even the local Pizza Barn, owned and operated by Wolf Pack alumnus Roger Diedrichsen, serves up fresh, local ingredients on its hand-tossed pies including Heck’s Meats and produce from both Lattin and Workman farms.
