Lyon County investigates wild horse harassment complaint in Silver Springs
Lyon County is investigating a complaint that road department personnel allegedly harassed wild horses early Monday near Lahontan Street and US 95A in Silver Springs.
In a news release from Lyon County Manager Jeff Page, the county's initial investigation has determined that an employee operating a street sweeper observed a group of horses moving toward US 95A and the employee began to move the horses east away from the highway.
A second vehicle, a 4,000 gallon water truck, was following the sweeper. Both vehicles initial assignment was to complete repair work on Eureka Street, according to the news release. Lyon County anticipates the investigation will be complete by the end of the week.
Lyon County has a significant problem in dealing with the horse population along the U.S. 50 Corridor and U.S. 95A from Silver Springs to Fernley, according to the news release.
Lyon County is reaching out to a number of state agencies to determine how to best move the horses that are close to the highway and to develop policies of when and how to safely take action.
Lyon County will be filing a report with the Sheriff's Office to ensure transparency, according to the news release.
