Carson City Ward 1 Supervisor Karen Abowd announces she will not seek a third term
After serving 7 years and approaching the completion of 2 terms in office as Ward 1 Carson City Supervisor, Karen Abowd announced Friday that she will not seek another term.
“Leadership is knowing when is the time to stand up — and knowing when to stand down,” said Abowd.
“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve, to help implement and to progress forward in our community,” said Supervisor Abowd. “As an Interior Designer by trade, my practice is always to set the stage for those to live in an environment so they can make it their own. Now it is time for another to take the lead.”
“I love this city. I will always be grateful to the people who elected me. I am not going away. My plan is to pursue other interests and to help in other ways that the time demand of being a public servant does not allow.”
Supervisor Abowd will leave office January 07, 2019.
Since taking office, Supervisor Abowd has served in many capacities: as Mayor Pro-Tem; as Chairman of both the Redevelopment Authority and Carson Water Subconservancy District; as an active board member on the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority; as a Carson City Cultural Commissioner; and as a participant on the SART Task Force; as well as numerous other committees.
In 2012, Supervisor Abowd received the 2012 Politician of the Year Award from the Human Services Network. “It has been a pleasure working with my fellow Board members, all the talented staff and the citizens of this community in problem-solving and finding creative ways to address local needs and concerns. To engage with such positive ‘can-do’ attitudes is so refreshing. I will miss that interaction,” said Supervisor Abowd.
“My term in office began in economically challenging times. It was required through the course of the Great Recession to collectively work through those challenges and to find opportunities for community growth such as initiating the impetus for the downtown as well as north, south and east corridor infrastructure improvements, securing the remaining funding needed for the Multipurpose Athletic Center at the Boys & Girls Club, and bringing to fruition the building of a long overdue animal shelter. I so appreciate my time in office as humbling, enriching and rewarding. I am proud to have served Carson City.”
Supervisor Karen Abowd is married to her husband Charlie. They have three children and four grandchildren. Prior to becoming Supervisor for Ward 1 and during her time in public service she has continued her work in interior design and is co-owner with her husband of Café at Adeles.
