Fire at Elks Point Road near Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe fully contained at 2.6 acres
UPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.
UPDATE 4:32PM: The fire burning on the Lake Tahoe side of Douglas County at Elks Point Road was reported at 3:50 p.m., is about 1-2 acres in size and was found by firefighters as having a rapid rate of spread, according to U.S. Forest Service Spokeswoman Cheva Heck. No homes are currently threatened, there have been no evacuations thus far. The fire is on U.S. Forest Service land and right now the responding agencies are the Forest Service, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection and a fixed winged aircraft.
At the last report the Forest Service fuels chief said that agencies are getting a handle on the fire.
UPDATE 4:19PM: Tahoe Douglas firefighters are responding this afternoon to a report of a wildland fire near Round Hill on the Lake Tahoe side of Douglas County. There is smoke in the area, according to witnesses. A Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District team is at Elks Point Road and has apparently spotted the fire near the end of the Sewage Plant Road area. It is unknown at this time how big it is or if it is spreading. Additional backup fire units have been called out to help. At least two engines that have been fighting the Carson Valley fire south of Gardnerville on Highway 395 are headed to the Lake Tahoe fire.
