South Lake Tahoe air show officials monitor King Fire developments; blaze prompts free admission to Saturday event
Smoke from the King Fire that originated in Pollock Pines has entered the Lake Tahoe Basin and is affecting visibility and air quality. City officials are closely monitoring the King Fire along with wind patterns from NOAA, visibility with the FAA and local and State law enforcement.
Air show officials have decided to provide free admission to all attendees for the 25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show this Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8am-4pm at Lake Tahoe Airport. At this time there are no flight closures and the aerial performances and all on ground activities are still going to occur. We will continue to closely monitor this situation and provide timely updates.
As of Thursday, the King Fire is almost 71,000 acres. The containment remains at 5 percent. About 3,700 fire personnel are working on this fire, including a very large contingent of aircraft and fire equipment.
Highway 50 is currently closed from Pollock Pines due to the King Fire Wildfire. SR-207 (Kingsbury Grade) is also closed due to ongoing roadway construction. Please use the following when planning your trip to Lake Tahoe this weekend:
From Reno
To South Lake Tahoe
Take Hwy 395 South (approx. 31 miles)
(Note: Hwy 395 will take you through Carson City)
Right on Hwy 50 to South Lake Tahoe
From Sacramento/Bay Area
To South Lake Tahoe
From Sacramento Hwy 50 east is closed from Pollock Pines due to a Wildfire
As an alternate route, Take I-80 east Truckee to Hwy 89. Go through Tahoe City and down the West shore of Lake Tahoe.
Or Hwy 49 in Placerville to Hwy 88 to Hwy 89 to Hwy 50 in Meyers.

The 25th annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California is scheduled for this Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of its many professional aerial participants.

Two World War II aircraft will be on display and will do a Fly-By during the Show. The aircraft are the F6F Hellcat and The Japanese Zero

South Lake Tahoe area youth’s ages 8 through 17 will have a chance to take to the skies on September 21 as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1073 of Truckee hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the South Lake Tahoe Airport.
Flights occur on the day after the Lake in the Sky Air Show. Registration will occur at the air show. Due to the large number of youths who are expected to register, there will be no registrations on the 21st.
Gates open to the public on Saturday, September 20th at 8 am. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10am with a live singing of our National Anthem and a few words from Mayor Pro Tem Brooke Laine. The aerial performances will begin right after and run until 4 pm. More information is available online at www.lakeintheskyairshow.com.
