Fishing report through Sept. 6

By Don Quilici
Here is the fishing report for the week of Aug. 31 through Sept. 6. The report covers rivers, streams and lakes in Nevada, Northern California, the Sierra and Southern Oregon.

ALPINE LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BEAR RIVER RESERVOIR (LOWER), CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake: FREE FISHING DAY – SEPTEMBER 3, 2011.
The Lake is plum full! Yup, we’re spilling — Thanks, SCE! It’s a beautiful thing to see the water going over the spillway and the Lake filled to the gills. There are some Willows across from the dam that are starting to lighten up, but that’s it so far.
Lots of limits still coming out of the Lake – thanks to the stockings of the Department of Fish and Game – another load came in Friday – thanks again.
Quite a number of limits from the Inlet using Salmon eggs on a slow retrieve, nightcrawlers or Power Bait are working, too.
Trolling flashers and a nightcrawler or just a nightcrawler or trolling a Woolly Bugger close to shore.
Drifting using the same as you have been ~ nightcrawlers or Power Baits.
Izzy Coutin of Upland made a new friend at the Lake who became his fishing mentor – Dick Riggs of Van Nuys (a long-time Lake Sabrina fisherman). Dick took Izzy out trolling (a first for Izzy) and he immediately caught a fish, then another – he ended up with 2 limits in 2 days.
The first two limits Izzy has every caught – dinner for two nights.
Good catching, Izzy!
Got the berry from Wye Road Feed in Bishop and, boy, are they wonderful — made four berry pies — GONE!
I’ll be making lots more for Labor Day Weekend, so come on up and enjoy homemade pie and homemade ice cream on the deck. Thanks, Marcie for all your hard work in bringing the berries our way!
All the campgrounds in the Bishop Creek Canyon are still open. The only campground to take reservations is Four Jeffery (www.reserveamerica.com and enter Four Jeffrey) all others are first come first serve. There is a full hook-up campground also on the South Lake road, Creekside RV Park.
Take it easy on all the mountain roads, the deer are out in the mornings and evenings and there’s lots of hikers out there – can’t stress this enough!
We had some LOUD thunder booms and a few sprinkles over the weekend, but temps are expected to be for highs in the mid-70s with lows in the high-50s – doesn’t get better than that! You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com. REMEMBER THAT JACKET – IT TENDS TO BE BETWEEN 25 AND 30 DEGREES COOLER AT THE LAKE.
So the skeeter population seems to be fading into the sunset – now don’t misunderstand me, there are still some out there, but they’re nothing like they were - but still remember when applying bug juice, sunscreen, SANITIZER or any other FU-FU juice, WASH YOUR HANDS! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky, too, although have you ever tasted Power Bait or Worms – to each their own.
We’ve still making HOMEMADE vanilla ice-cream to go with our HOMEMADE pie – we also have sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa during our regular store hours!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) (e-mail to sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake: Wow – what a week of fishing at South Lake! Topped by a massive 29” Rainbow caught by Jimmy Brown from the Inland Empire that weighed in at a whopping 10 pound 8 ounce, the fishing for large numbers and quality fish was excellent all week long.
Heavy stocking by DFG and the second half of the trophy Rainbows purchased by Southern California Edison arriving this week should make for a great week and the outlook is excellent for the upcoming holiday week.
The best spots on the lake continue to be the inlets in the back of the lake behind the island.  The Gilbert Glacier and the Treasure Lake inlets are holding tons of active feeding trout.
Some anglers are catching and releasing as many as 60 fish per boat using artificials. Don’t mean to sound like a broken record but mini-jigs were the way to go this week with bright pink, grasshopper, or any dark jigs working best. Folks tying directly to the jig or fishing the jig 5ft under a bobber were the most successful.
Salmon Peach Power Bait is doing well for bait dunkers.
With the inlets fishing so good, the Rock Slide is being passed over by the majority of anglers but the folks wise enough to stop and fish there are doing excellent. Bring pink plastic trout worms, mini-jigs or nightcrawlers fished under a bobber are doing best.
Wind made fishing the dam a bit difficult this week but anglers braving the breezy conditions did very well on fish to 3 lbs using the heavier metal lures like Kastmasters and red/gold Thomas Bouyants. Trolling was tough this week for the few anglers out there trying for the deep fish.
We’d like to remind private boaters that there is designated boat trailer parking in the lower lot – please use it!
It’s frustrating for other folks visiting the lake and trailhead to see two private boaters taking up nine parking spots because they’re too lazy to disconnect their trailer and put it where it belongs.
South Fork Bishop Creek: Flows are still up but most of the creek is very fishable and holding trout.
Streamers were best for the fly fishers, crawlers and Salmon eggs were best for the spin fishers.
Weir Pond: Fishing pressure has been surprisingly light this week but the guys and gals out there in waders casting dries like Caddis or Adams in the evening are doing great for small Browns and Brookies.  Stripping olive or brown Woolly Buggers has accounted for most of the Rainbows being caught.
North Lake: Steady action for both fly and spin anglers reported this week.
Stripping streamers is the best tactic for the fly fishers while the usual lures and bait were working for bank fisherman.
Intake II: Not too many reports coming my way this week but the few I received said the bite was not very good compared to other canyon waters like Sabrina, South or North Lakes.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF:
Lower Blue Lake: It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.
Upper Blue Lake: It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
The Reservoir is still fishing excellent with most anglers getting into lots of nice fish up to 3 and 4 pounds.
Bait fishing is doing great with crawlers, Power Bait and Gulp Eggs.
Trollers have been using Thomas Bouyants, Needlefish and small Rapalas.
Haven't heard much about fly fishing lately, but there's been some good Midges and Damsels hatching out daily.
There's been quite a few perch being caught lately up to just over 3 pounds, still waiting for that new state record!!

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Great. Water temps warming up now.
Fishing Conditions: Good to Excellent but mostly smaller fish.
A monster once in a while if you are patient. Fish all of the inlets and outlets for best results. This time of year bigger is generally better.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
With the mainstem closed upstream of river mile 2.2, anglers will find good cutthroat fishing on any of the tributaries entering into the Chetco.
The South Fork Chetco has some of the best public access and is in a very remote setting.
Temporary regulations in effect beginning Aug. 1, 2011:
Mainstem Chetco River upstream of BPA Powerline crossing at river mile 2.2 is closed to all angling including trout through Nov. 4, 2011.
Tributaries to the Chetco River remain open for trout through Oct. 31, 2011 as per Southwest Zone Regulations.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.
Pike fishing has also been poor.
There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlakeresort.com) reports:
Catch of the Week: Michael Kama from Simi Valley, CA has the catch of the week at 2 pounds 3 ounces caught on nightcrawlers at the Inlet.

Weather: Daytime highs in the 70s and evening lows in the 40's. Scattered showers Sunday and Monday and full sun the rest of the week. Here is a local site that is usually quite accurate www.mammothweather.com.

Tactics/Bait: It is really important to get out early fishing in the warmer weather.  Needlefish lures have still been doing well this week and nightcrawlers are still working well.
If trolling go 6 or 7 colors...bait fishing has been more production than trolling this week. The inlet at the back of the lake is still the most productive place to catch fish. Other locations to try are the outlet, North Shore, South Shore, Creek, Jetty, Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits that are good to try:
TroutKrilla, Trout Teasers, Midges, Panther Martin, Thomas Bouyants, Green Woolly Buggers, White Mini Jig and Power Bait.

Stocking: DFG has stocked again this week.

Sunrise - Sunset: Sunrise this week 6:19 am - 6:24 am and Sunset 7:31 pm - 7:23 pm.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Good. Clear water everywhere but small flecks of algae starting to show for next bloom in a few weeks I imagine.
Lake is still as full as it gets.
North end is crystal clear beyond the weeds last 250 yards to the mouth.
Massive weed beds every where will come to the surface soon.
Fishing Conditions: Excellent if big fish do it for you!
The big fish are really spread out from the mouth of McGee out to 22 ft of water all along the old channel and amongst the weeds eating fry.
Midging is slow-steady from early to about noon but the fish are on the move daily, so be prepared to keep moving if you can get a spot where you want to go.
North end has a bunch of recent stockers that came to visit from the Owens. Some big fish show up occasionally.
Stripping fry patterns is working everywhere, but they are small so skip the Matukas and Hornbergs.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) reports:
Lake Conditions: The current lake level is 82 percent (20 percent higher than last year at this time!).
The temperature is between 70 and 72 degrees.
Shore fishing: Been a bit slow but best results with Power Bait or worms.
Around the south point just below Honker a nice 2 pounder was caught on Aug 29th, using Power Bait.
Eagle Point and Fairview have also been doing well.
Catfish are also being caught throughout the lake.
Trolling:  Wee Dick Nite Copper Red Head has been the lure of choice for the past several days. Larger fish are about 20 feet deep.
Fly fishing:  Been a bit slow, best reports have been using Callibaetis or Blood Midge with a sinking line in the Jenkins Point area.
Fly fishing should pick up in the next few days.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing remains good for rainbow trout and largemouth bass as large as 2.5 pounds. The most productive times are the hour right before sunset and the first hour after sunrise. Trout are biting on rainbow Power Bait and night crawlers with mini marshmallows.
Anglers will find weedy conditions along the shoreline.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Trout and crappie are both biting at this Lincoln County reservoir, but the largemouth bass bite has slowed.
Fish the dam and south shoreline for crappie and trout.
For largemouth bass work the now emerging islands.
The trout are taking Power Bait and nightcrawlers with mini marshmallows while the crappie are hitting small, brightly colored jigs.

FEATHER RIVER, NORTH FORK, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

FRENCH MEADOWS RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Summer is starting to wind down, but the fishing has not.
Local pair had good luck at the dam, caught two 16-inch rainbow trout, and three catfish, two 12-inch and one 15-inch.
They were using nightcrawlers, and they were fishing early evening.
Shore fishing has been good at Nightcrawler Bay, Crystal Point, and near Spring Creek Campground. Most have been using nightcrawlers in combination with Power Bait or marshmallows, even salmon eggs.
Lures being used are Roostertails (brown, black, green) and Rocky Mountain Assassins (green, yellow, red).
Trolling has been good at the north end and near Crystal Point. They are going about 30 to 40 feet deep, during the midday you need to go deeper. Fishermen are using various lures, Dick Nite Copper Red Head, Tasmanian
Devil, and various Umpqua flies (black, green, brown).

HAMILTON BRANCH CREEK, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Great. Flows at 48 CFS as of 8/25.

Caddis Emergers til noon. Hoppers and Baetis in the afternoon.

It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
Haven't had too many reports from Kirman this past week, the few anglers we have talked to have done ok. They're reporting only 3 to 5 fish per angler but of course they're pretty nice fish!
Leech patterns like Seal Buggers have been doing the best and also there's been some Scud action as well.

LAUGHLIN, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River: Anglers are catching rainbow trout along Casino Row. These are holdovers from past fish plants though some are in the 20-inch class.
Striped bass fishing is slow to fair from below Davis Dam south past the Big Bend of the River State Park.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Water conditions: Great.
Fishing conditions: Great. Stripping streamers working best with a Nymph trailer.
Try fishing some stimulators and Callibaetis dries at the inlets, you're almost always going to see rising fish there now.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Hot temperatures have pushed fishermen into the nighttime and very early morning hours. Most are off the water by about 8:30 a.m.
Anglers working the Echo Bay area have found good action for catfish.
Stewarts Point is giving up whisker fish as large as six pounds, making nighttime fishing worth the effort.
Striper action remains slow though anglers are connecting with fish in deep water below shad.
The water is still coming up and as of Monday the elevation was nearly 1,112 feet.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The waters below Willow Beach continue to give up large striped bass, many weighing in the double digit range and some pushing past 25 pounds.
Anglers are finding the best action in the very early morning hours before sunrise but also are catching fish in the late evening.
Large plugs and swimbaits, such as the nine-inch Spro, AC Plug or LA Slider, are catching the fish.
Trout anglers are catching limits of 12- to 14-inch stocked rainbows with silver bladed spinners, Kastmasters and Power Bait.
Mid-lake striper action is hit-and-miss.
Intermittent winds are making things difficult, though anglers are finding good action for catfish from two to as much as eight pounds. The whisker fish are hitting throughout the day, but the bite is best at dusk and dawn.
Commercial catfish bait, nightcrawlers and anchovies are catching the fish.
Bluegill hanging out near shallow cover also are hitting night crawlers.
Largemouth bass action is slow to fair.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational ocean Chinook fishing is open.
Single point, barbless hooks must be used in this fishery.
The selective ocean Coho fishery closed on August 13.
Fishing for bottom fish is now closed outside of 20 fathoms in order to reduce catch and release mortality on yelloweye rockfish. Anglers are reporting good catches of bottom fish when weather is favorable. However, anglers fishing from boats may no longer retain Cabezon because the quota of 15.8 metric tons will have been met. Tuna fishing has been good when the ocean has been calm.  Most tuna anglers are traveling 30 – 40 miles to find fish. Fishing from beaches has been fair for redtail surfperch.

The crazy good salmon bite continues here for draggers and backtrollers from Hamilton City to the Barge Hole!
The fish are mainly 6-12 pounds though there are lots of 20′s around and rumor has it there was a 50+ taken a few days back.
The bite near Verona has also been good for trollers and anglers fishing on anchor. Top that off with the fact that the bite in the Bay at California City was hot this week…meaning more fish are coming!!

SAN JOAQUIN, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Flows are down to reasonable levels, and the waters starting to warm.
Be careful, there are still a lot of places that aren't wadeable.
Fishing Conditions: Excellent! Fishing is great in the morning, til about noon. Things pick back up in the evening til dark. Serious dry action at dusk. Mostly Mayflies.

UNION VALLEY RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
The Virginias are fishing great these days as well. The usual suspects for flies, bait and lures will all produce. These include Seal Buggers, soft hackles, beetles, ants and Matukas for flies, Power Bait, crawlers and Gulp Eggs for bait and Kastmasters and Hot Shots for lures.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
John and Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort (760-647-6484) (mail to vir@qnet.com) reports:
The Mosquitoes are starting to taper off so bring a little bug juice.
Another great week of weather with a few grey clouds here and some thunderheads developing, but still no precipitation.
Alpers are still coming out on a daily basis with DFG planting all three lakes.
Fishing has been great on just about everything, salmon eggs, crawlers, lures and Power Bait, and mouse-tails (pink-white or white-pink). Yellow garlic Power Bait (must be Zeke's), yellow garlic (never heard of it), also red Power Bait.

Tubers are doing well on olive/rust Bird's Nest, and going through their special flies for those hard to catch Hawgs as they have seen every possible fly in vest.

More aspens are yellowing up the Virginia Lakes road and the wild Iris is almost done.  Wildflowers around the Frog lakes are fading and most of the high country blooms are in the "dry" stage.

Backcountry lakes are still producing, but water is warm so bring some Tums for moments of despair, and 12 foot leaders.
 Big fish for the week
Dennis Nolan of Dayton Nev., 3 pound 1 ounce Alpers on a worm, 8.27.11 at Lower Virginia Lake (LV).

East Walker River: The East is running around 350 today, and has been there for a few days now. The fishing has been pretty good, mainly Nymphing with Caddis Nymphs and small Midges.
The temps are good as well as the water clarity.
We've had a couple decent reports on dry fly fishing late in the evening and also a couple decent reports on streamers, also late in the evening.
The Rosachi section in Nevada has also been fishing well, you're more likely to have good dry/dropper action down there.
Some patterns that have been working include Rainbow Warrior, Dark Lord, Drowned Trico, Zebra Midge, Buckskin Caddis, Fox's Poopah, 3-wire Caddis, dead drift crayfish, Chubby Chernobyl, E/C Caddis, BH Swimming Caddis and flashback emergers.
West Walker River: The West is producing lots of nice fish these days.

Sceirine Ranch: The Sceirine has been fishing well this past week also, dry/dropper rigs are doing well and we've had some good reports on streamers.
Other than that it's the usual Nymphs like the ones being used on the California side. Lots of fish being caught in the 20+ inch range.
Hunewill Pond: We haven't had any reports from the pond this week, will pass on info as we get it in.
