Area disabled veterans announce nuptials
Northern Cal/Neva residents Bonnie Porter and David Kotzebue, both disabled veterans, recently announced their intentions to marry. Ms. Porter and Mr. Kotzebue both have service-related disabilities, so their nuptials are planned for Veterans' Day.
Ms. Porter, of Fair Play, California, served as an AWACS Communications Technician in the U.S. Air Force. Her service took her around the globe, literally, from Japan to Saudi Arabia. Mr. Kotzebue, of Carson City, served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with assignments from Germany to Fort Knox, Kentucky.
“We have a friendly rivalry going, especially during the Army/Air Force game,” they quip. “But on Veterans' Day, both a soldier and an airwoman will grace the top of our cake AND the front of the altar!”
Kotzebue graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He explains that his time with the Corps of Engineers equipped him for a career as a civil engineer. He is currently employed with Resource Concepts, Inc., of Carson City. Ms. Porter currently attends Columbia College in Sonora, California, where she is pursuing an Associate's Degree in Science.
Mr. Kotzebue had his ankle injured in the Rangers and “sports extra hardware” as he says, “You've heard of the $6 Million Dollar Man? Would you believe, $5.99?”
Miss Porter experienced PTSD in the Air Force and was injured in an industrial accident afterwards. She looks at her college and her marriage as “a new lease on life.” Both were honorably discharged after they fulfilled their military service.
Ms. Porter was previously married, but her husband passed away from cancer. She has one daughter, who is helping her plan the wedding, and by that daughter, two grandsons and a granddaughter, who reside in Placerville, California.
Mr. Kotzebue had two sons and a daughter by a previous marriage. The couple is hoping to have them all in attendance. The service will be held near the bride's home in Fair Play. Details will be released as they become set.
