Google gives $100,000 sponsorship grant for 'Grow with Google' Reno job event
RENO — Google continued its Grow with Google tour in Reno this week by announcing a sponsorship grant totalling $100,000 that was presented to JOIN Inc.
The Google sponsorship will enable workforce development organization JOIN Inc. Training Nevadans for Careers to prepare job seekers with the digital skills necessary to obtain jobs and succeed in the growing Nevada workforce. JOIN Inc. will deploy Applied Digital Skills to their diverse group of local job seekers and those transitioning careers, while staff will be trained on how to use Google’s jobs search functionality to streamline the online job search for active job seekers.
“JOIN Inc’s innovative approach to breaking the cycle of poverty through workforce development and training stood out to us in particular as we looked at existing organizations and resources in the Reno community,” said Jesse Haines, Director of Grow with Google. “Through programming to teach digital skills, they will lead the way forward for many people in Reno who are looking to take advantage of the opportunities the digital economy provides.”
Launched in October 2017, Grow with Google is Google’s new initiative to help create economic opportunities for Americans. The project is an extension of Google’s long-standing commitment to making information and technology accessible to everyone, and focuses on bringing even more digital skills and learning opportunities to communities across the United States.
“I would like to thank Google for bringing its Grow with Google event to Reno to train job seekers, entrepreneurs, educators, and students who are looking to improve their digital skills. I believe that there’s no better place for it than Nevada — a state that went from having one of the worst unemployment rates during the recession to now being one of the fastest growing states in the nation,” said U.S. Senator Dean Heller, R-NV. “In order to capitalize on this state’s booming economy and help increase opportunities for all Nevadans, I’ll continue working to provide job seekers with the skills they need to succeed and to facilitate a competitive business environment, which includes increasing access to high-speed Internet and improving our aging infrastructure to keep pace with Nevada’s growth.
More than 700 jobseekers, local businesses, educators and students filled the Nevada Museum of Art. The event featured workshops, one-on-one coaching sessions, and demo booths aimed at small businesses, job seekers and non-profit organizations. Topics included job search strategies, presentation skills, search engine optimization, coding basics, online safety and more.
"Receiving this google sponsorship means the world to us. JOIN is thrilled to be partnering with Google to bring digital skills training to the growing workforce in Reno, and across Northern Nevada. We know that digital proficiency is critical for the increasing number of middle-skill jobs that are coming to the region." Said Denise Castle “This program allows us to enhance our services and provide an amazing platform of skills for individuals as they transition in the New Nevada Economy.”
In addition to its sponsorship of JOIN INC., Google partnered with a number of local partners for the event including the City of Reno, Community Foundation of Western Nevada, Community Services Agency, Desert Research Institute, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), Entrepreneurs Assembly Inc., Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Goodwill Industries of Sacramento Valley & Northern Nevada, JOIN Inc., NCET - Nevada's Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology, Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA), Reno Collective, StartUpNV, The Innevation Center University of Nevada, Reno, The Reno and Sparks Chamber of Commerce, Truckee Meadows Community College, Washoe County Library System, Washoe County School District, Western Nevada College, and Women Who Code.
Americans widely recognize the need for digital skills training, such as those provided by Grow with Google. An Economist study found that less than half of 18 to 25-year-olds believe their education gives them the skills that they need to even enter the country’s workforce, and by 2020 one-third of jobs will require skills that aren’t common in today’s workforce. Google hopes to address these education demands nationwide by supporting the nonprofits, schools, community organizations that are working hard to ensure more Americans have the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly digital economy.
