BAC’s Art in the Park program gives kids creative outlet in their own neighborhood
This summer the Brewery Arts Center has featured Art in the Park three days a week in the parking lot of Empire Elementary School near the entrance of Park Terrace in Carson City.
The program is made possible through the Brewery Arts Center and a grant from the Nevada Arts Council. The hope is by next summer grant funding will be available for the program to operate five days a week, said BAC Executive Director Gina Hill.
The project began July 6 and within a month it has had more than 250 visits from children. The project is three days a week during summer break, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome.
The park is located on the east side of Carson City at Stanton Drive and La Loma Drive in the parking lot adjacent to Empire Elementary School.
During Art in the Park days youngsters gather around an RV owned by BAC technician guru Jeff Fast. The RV, dubbed the “Micro BAC Bus” arrives in the parking lot adjacent to the park and sets up tables for drawing and painting or whatever activity is planned for the day. There have also been sessions in story theater.
“This is an opportunity to take art off the BAC campus and bring it into the community,” said Fast.
Each session features the BAC’s weekly Artist in Residence. On July 31 it was Tamara Holmes, who brought along Mandala stencils for the guests to creatively color in.
Art in the Park was also done in cooperation of Food for Thought and its lunch time program at Park Terrace.
“The idea being kids can have a free lunch, which, for some children, may be the only meal they get for the day, and then spend the rest of their lunch time putting their creative energies to work,” said Hill.
