National Night Out is back this Tuesday at Mills Park in Carson City
National Night Out, one of Carson City’s largest summer celebrations, is returning Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mills Park for its 17th year. And by all indications, it will be the biggest yet.
National Night Out is a way for residents to meet those who serve and protect our community as well as agencies that provide services, especially in areas of public health and safety. Agencies such as Search and Rescue, Health and Human Services, Care Flight, Advocates to End Domestic Violence, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Carson City Fire Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, Department of Wildlife, agency advocates and dozens more.
“This event gives our partners the chance to represent their organizations and share meaningful information about their operations,” said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. “In addition, National Night Out increases the exposure of community services that are otherwise overlooked or not widely recognized. Examples of these agencies surrounded Mills Park, such as the Department of Wildlife, Nevada Department of Corrections, our neighboring county law enforcement agencies, and courts.”
Last year, festivities included Carson City Sheriff’s Office demonstrations from Tarzan the K-9 Deputy showing his tackling skills, to tours of equipment such as patrol units and motorcycles, and kids even had a chance to solve their very own crime!
While the event is hosted by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, which generates its own funds annually to pay for the night, they are only one of over 140 agencies that participate each year.
In 2018, the Elk’s Club cooked up thousands of free hot dogs, supplied by Grocery Outlet, for dinner, Advocates to End Domestic Violence has a booth, along with the Parks Division, D.A.R.E, multiple military agencies, the Department of Wildlife, and more. See the video announcement here or below.
There are always enough events going on so that the event, while large, never feels overly crowded. Children could choose activities such as military obstacle courses, touring helicopters, scaling a rope course climbing wall, hauling search and rescue Jeeps (with the help of pulley systems), fishing games, equine meet and greets, and more.
