Sheriff’s Night Out returns Tuesday for 20th year in Carson City
This year, the annual Sheriff’s Night Out — formerly National Night Out — will celebrate its 20th year in Carson City.
The event, this Tuesday, August 1, is a way for the community to interact not only with its sheriff’s department, but firefighters, paramedics, park rangers, the National Guard, and many more organizations who come together to provide a free, family-fun event to the community.
According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, this event is critical to the relationship between the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves.
“This is critically important to our community,” Furlong said. “I look at what goes on nationwide, where you have crises and departments are trying to build relationships — you need to build relationships before you have crises. I’ve believed in this from the onset.”
In its 20th year, much has changed since the first Night Out, which was recently rebranded as the Sheriff’s Nice Out for Carson City.
“It has gotten bigger, better, we’ve expanded the base of participants, including involving nonprofit agencies and resources to better serve the community,” Furlong said.
The sheriff looks forward to further Night Outs within the community, so that the people of Carson City can get to know their Sheriff’s Office deputies on a personal level.
“This is our 20th anniversary and I am very, very proud of the interactions we get form the community in a non-stressful, fun environment, where kids can be entertained, get their hotdogs and their drinks, and have a great time.”
Sheriff’s Night Out takes place Tuesday, August 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mills Park. Participants can find family friendly fun, obstacle courses, can tour vehicles from multiple departments, all while getting their free hotdogs donated by Flocchini Sausage and cooked up by the Elks Lodge.
Elsewhere, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office will celebrate National Night Out from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, at the Fernley Out of Town Park Gazebo.
LCSO encourages residents and families join them in the annual, free event that feature games, a free hot dog dinner to the first 100 guests courtesy of the city of Fernley, drone demonstrations, a Care Flight air ambulance demonstration, K9 demonstration, a Battle of the Badges blood drive and more.
The park is located on Farm District Road and Highway 50A.
