Volunteers in Carson City's first Trash Mob set out to tidy up the town
Volunteers participated in Carson City's first Trash Mob bright and early Saturday morning, setting their sights and trash bags on the south side of College Parkway near the I-580 overpass.
Volunteer Randy Gaa said he noticed the trash along the multi-use path and wanted to do something about it. As a member of Muscle Powered, a community group that advocates bicycling and pedestrian friendly development, he brought up his concerns to Donna Inversin, Muscle Powered's president.
She suggested a "Trash Mob" and a plan behind it: Make it a monthly event with the goal of keeping local walking and biking paths clear of trash.
The idea behind Trash Mobs is similar to the popular flash mobs where a group of people gather in a public place and perform some pre-arranged task for a brief time before dispersing. Trash Mobs will involve collecting trash at a designated location for one hour. Trash collection will make the area safer and healthier for walking, biking and recreation.
Participants will gather on the third Saturday of each month from 8 to 9 a.m. at a prearranged location which will be coordinated through social media.
"We will be changing locations every month and we are open to suggestions," said Gaa. People can suggest places for the Trash Mob on the Muscle Powered Facebook page.
The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and Carson City Public Works are also involved with the effort, assisting with the trash removal after the Trash Mob has gathered and bagged the trash at a designated spot.
