Carson City Fire Department called to brush fire near Silver Saddle Ranch
Carson City Fire Department was called Thursday afternoon to the area near Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road for a reported brush fire.
The call came into dispatch at 2:10 p.m. Dispatch reports the fire may have started from a downed power pole which touched off a fire that began to spread.
Carson City firefighters report the brush fire is around 10 feet by 10 feet in size and had been mostly knocked down by volunteers when trucks arrived, according to the battalion chief on scene.
The battalion chief reports the downed power line was strung along a barbed wire fence near the entrance of the ranch and Carson River Park.
As wildfires continue to affect Nevada and other areas of the west, the American Red Cross reminds residents to be prepared if they live in an area that may be prone to wildfires.
Carson City has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System, an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices).
The system is capable of dialing 50,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers our recorded message to a live person or an answering machine, making three attempts to connect to any number.

What should I do if there are reports of wildfires in my area?
— Listen to local radio and television stations for updated emergency information.
— Limit exposure to smoke and dust.
— Keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors to prevent outside smoke from getting in.
What should I do to prepare ahead of time?
— Keep the areas surrounding your home clear of brush, debris, and other materials that may catch fire.
— Check your emergency kit and replenish any items missing or in short supply.
— Don’t forget to include critical documents, medications, and food and water for your entire family
Don’t wait. Evacuate.
If ordered to evacuate, leave immediately and head to your identified shelter — this can be with family or friends, or at a hotel, Red Cross shelter or other location you select.
Have a Family Plan
— If separated, have a meeting place near your home.
— If you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate, know the meeting place location outside of your neighborhood.
— Plan your evacuation routes. Your primary route may not be accessible, so list two routes
— If your household is separated or unable to communicate with each other, have an outside emergency contact.
Returning home after a wildfire
— Do not enter your home until fire officials say it is safe.
— Use caution when entering burned areas as hazards may still exist, including hot spots which can flare up without warning.
