Carson City weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning, firefighters on high alert
It will be dry and breezy today with Red Flag Warnings in effect for much of western Nevada including Carson City. Firefighters around the region are keeping a watchful eye on conditions and have already made smoke investigations checks in area.
A small, smoldering campfire was discovered by firefighters at around noon doing a smoke investigation north of Carson City, according to dispatch. A small brush fire was reported at around 11:30 a.m. in the Silver Springs area, according to the Central Lyon County Fire District.
Strong wind gusts are expected through early Thursday evening with humidity dropping into the 5-15 percent range, according to the National Weather Service.
The Red Flag Warning has been issued for predicted areas of low humidity and grasses that are sufficiently dry. This is most of western Nevada including Carson City, Minden, Fallon, Reno, Fernley, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Yerington, and Hawthorne.
The weather service advises people to be especially careful around dry vegetation and not do anything that could cause a spark. New fires will spread rapidly in windy conditions.
