New restaurant Gather carries on family legacy of Carson City native

Angela Bullentini Wolf has a long family history in the Carson City area. Her ancestors settled here about 150 years ago way back in the days of Abraham Curry.

They were ranchers and business owners then.

Wolf, a practicing attorney and partner at the Kilpatrick and Bullentini Law Office in Carson City, is about to join them and come full circle with her family's historic legacy.

"My family has always been a part of the fabric of Carson City," she said. "I intend to contribute in a positive way to continue that legacy."

In July, Wolf plans to open her new restaurant venture, Gather, on the bottom floor of the old Horseshoe Club building located at 402 North Carson Street in Carson City.

"It is an idea that I've always had in the back of my mind," she said. "I'm intending to contribute to Nevada's economy in really positive ways."

A distinctive part of Gather will be its focus on the farm-to-table concept, a restaurant trend that brings locally fresh food products straight to the plate.

To accomplish this, Wolf is working directly with local Northern Nevada farmers and ranchers, the very folks her ancestors were back in the day.

Producers from Fallon, Carson City, Douglas County and all the way up to Elko will be among her product partners.

"We will be featuring local farmers and producers for our meats and produce," Wolf said. "I am in love with the farm-to-table movement."

Wolf said the farm-to-table concept also fits nicely with her own lifestyle, which includes eating right and treading lightly.

"I'm very health and environmentally conscious, so I'm really attracted to the symbiotic nature of the farm-to-table movement," she said. "We know our farmers, where our food is coming from, how they are raising that food, and what's put on that food."

Locally grown products also have a much shorter distance between the farms and ranches they are harvested from to the dining tables they are consumed at.

"If you are eating locally, that's also reducing your carbon footprint," Wolf said. "Instead of getting tomatoes from Mexico, you're getting tomatoes from Dayton."

Wolf describes Gather's menu as elevated comfort food, which includes the farm-to-table principle.

"It's all meshed together," she said. "Our goal is to offer comfort food favorites and a high quality version featuring locally raised products."

Offering a healthy eating alternative to residents and visitors of Carson City means a lot to Wolf, who recalls growing up in the Nevada state capital with limited restaurant options.

"When I grew up here, we didn't have a whole lot of options for purchasing really healthy food. It was mainly fast food or chain restaurants," said the 1995 Carson High School graduate. "I'm excited to bring something new and healthier to Carson."

Eventually, Wolf said an indoor farmer's market will become another unique feature of Gather. But that will be a second future phase of her venture.

First is the restaurant, which Wolf said she has styled as an appeal to everyone.

"This is a place to come to eat a casual lunch, or have a dinner that celebrates a special event," she said. "We're going to hit that full spectrum. It's going to be family friendly, yet we'll have a full service bar."

A full children's menu will also be included, she said.

"That's going to go beyond fried foods," Wolf said. "I want to focus on healthier options for kids."

Wolf said she hopes to open the doors to the 2,900 square-foot restaurant with seating for about 80 people by July 19. Business hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Two brush fires were reported Thursday afternoon in the Dayton area of Lyon County, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Units responding to one of the fires have since been canceled.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City hosts its second Harvest Train weekend this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22, with steam train rides, a pumpkin patch, craft fair and food trucks.

Carson City Fire Department was called late Thursday morning to a brush fire reported in the area of South Carson Street and Highway 50 West near the Spooner junction. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames before it began to spread.
