Carson City area road report for week of June 13-19

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 13-19, 2016: Epic Rides, a nationally known endurance bike ride will be held in Carson City on June 17th through the 19th. There will be significant impacts to traffic on Carson Street and west of downtown.

Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. The following impacts are expected:
— Traffic on North Carson Street remains one lane in each direction.
— Washington, Ann, Sophia and Caroline streets will be closed to to the east to Plaza.
— Spear and 2nd will be closed to the west to Curry.
— These closures will be in effect all week and work will only take place during the day.

Downtown and Third Street businesses are open during construction. For details regarding traffic impacts, please refer to the material provided in local media outlets or go to carsonproud.com for more information. These sources are updated weekly throughout the duration of the project.

Lane closures with flagger controlled traffic at the following locations due to utility/road work from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:
— Center Drive south of Clear Creek Avenue near Topsy Lane, Monday-Friday
— Northridge Drive, Monday-Thursday
— College Parkway westbound lane reduction between Airport Road and Otha Street, Monday-Wednesday

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility/road work please follow detours:
— Lompa Lane between Carmine Street and College Parkway, Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
— Topsy Lane between Center Drive and U.S. 395, Monday-Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Race Track Road and Bigelow Drive south of Snyder Avenue, Monday-Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Jeanell Drive between Winnie Lane and Michael Drive, Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Anderson Street between Robinson and Caroline Streets Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— North Nevada Street between Telegraph Avenue and Proctor Street
— Division Street between Musser and King Streets, Monday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Northbound U.S. 395 between Clear Creek Avenue and Snyder Avenue will be reduced from three to two lanes until June 24.

Lane and ramp closures will take place on I-580 Carson City Freeway and U.S. 50, through June 14, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

Extended paving sessions, on I-580 in Washoe Valley, are scheduled through the next few weekends and for weekend hours to avoid impacting weekday commute travel.

Here is the Lake Tahoe and Sierra area road report from Caltrans for the week of June 12-18, 2016.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Mankato Place to Cathedral Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations around the clock from 10 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Friday for roadway excavation, drainage work and curb and gutter construction.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to just north of the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project is constructing new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repaving a four-mile section of the highway. Completion is expected in summer 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Cascade Creek: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 2 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work and permanent erosion control.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway is being resurfaced. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 10th Street to 13th Street: Northbound and southbound motorists can expect the #2 lane and shoulder closed around the clock from 9 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Friday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from the junction with State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street: Motorists can expect the #1 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for utility work. Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from Beach Avenue to Deer Street from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Friday for utility work. Motorists also can expect the eastbound and westbound shoulders to be closed from Fox Street to Beaver Street from 7 a .m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $57 million project by El Dorado County to construct a new overcrossing over U.S. Highway 50, new on- and off-ramps with signalized intersections, and new bicycle and pedestrian facilities at Silva Valley Parkway in El Dorado Hills.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Agate Road to Anderson Road in Tahoe Vista: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday for utility work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from Koki Lane to Pleasant Valley Road West: Motorists can expect long-term one-way traffic controls around the clock for emergency utility work to fix a broken sewer line.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) at Coloma Street in Placerville: Motorists can expect one-way traffic controls from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Bedford Avenue to Canal Street in Placerville: Westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday and 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday for highway construction.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Truckee Drive to River Drive: Eastbound motorists can expect lane closures around the clock from 9 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Friday for gas line utility work. Eastbound motorists also can expect the #2 lane closed from Trout Creek to Tulare Avenue from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday and from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Cherry Street to Trout Street in Homewood: Southbound motorists and bicyclists can expect the right shoulder closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday for bridge work on the multi-use path extension.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at Rock Creek Road: Motorists can expect long-term signalized one-way traffic control for emergency repair work, which is scheduled to be completed by July.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Northstar Drive to the junction with State Route 28 in Kings Beach: Motorists can expect intermittent one-way traffic controls at various locations from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work continues on a $36 million project to increase the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance will be increased on seven structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other two will have the roadway below dug down.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Sierra College Boulevard to Newcastle Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures and on-ramp closures from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Saturday for bridge and paving work, specifically Horseshoe Bar, Penryn and Newcastle Road ramps. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday on the Brace, Gilardi, Horseshoe Bar, King, Penryn, Newcastle and Magra overcrossings for bridge and paving work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Long Ravine underpass to .2 miles east of Magra Road overcrossing: Roadwork begins for the 2.5 year, $50.6 million project to construct at 3 miles of additional ‘truck climbing lane’ and other improvements to primarily eastbound I-80 east of Colfax including widening the Cape Horn undercrossing bridge.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) from Route 174/80 Separator to Secret Town overcrossing (Magra and Alpine): Motorists can expect overnight, alternating lane, shoulder and median closures from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday June 13 through 8 a.m. Friday June 17 for K-rail installation.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) from the Kingvale undercrossing to the Nevada County Line: Motorists can expect right lane closure from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday June 12 through 10 a.m. Saturday June 18 for pavement work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) at the Kingvale undercrossing: Motorists can expect full onramp to EB I-80 closure from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday June 12 through Saturday June 18 for pavement repair.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at Kingvale undercrossing: Motorists can expect intermittent, 24-hour right lane closures from Midnight Sunday June 12 through 11:59 p.m. Friday June 17 for striping operations.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Heron Road to Heesche Avenue: Motorists can expect intermittent, 24-hour one way traffic controls for lane and shoulder closures from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday June 13-16 and Friday June 17 from 6 a.m. to midnight for culvert repair.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Highway 20 junction to South Fork Yuba River Bridge: Motorists can expect intermittent, 24-hour one way traffic controls for lane, shoulder and median closures from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday June 12-16 and Friday June 17 from 6 a.m. to midnight for paving operations.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Rocky Rest Campground to Yuba Pass Summit: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for right lane closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday June 13-16 for ditch cleaning.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Smithneck Road to Sierra City Landfill: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday June 13-14 for crack seal operations.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Hill Street to Genasci Road: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday June 15-16 for crack seal operations.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from just north of Sage Hen Road to the Nevada County line: Motorists can expect intermittent, 24-hour one way traffic controls from 87 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday June 13 through 7 a.m. Saturday June 18 for roadway excavation.

State Route 89 (Sierra County) from the SR 49/Sattley junction to the Fletcher Creek Bridge: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday June 13-17 for AC paving.

State Route 174 (Nevada County) from Ophir Street to Memorial Lane: Motorists can expect overnight, one way traffic controls from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday June 13 through Friday June 17 for utility work.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Road to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect one way traffic control and right shoulder restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday June 13 through Friday June 17 for highway construction.

State Route 193 (Placer County) at Fowler Road: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday June 13 through Wednesday June 15 for pavement work.

Lane closures and travel delays will begin Wednesday, Nov. 13 on U.S. 95 Alternate in Yerington as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes roadway drainage improvements.

UPDATE: Due to increased fire weather conditions, NV Energy has upgraded a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch to Warning status in Genoa, southwestern Carson City and Virginia City Highlands in northern Nevada for today, Nov. 13 and into tomorrow morning.
A PSOM warning means a de-energization is likely to prevent the possibility of sparking a wildfire.

A storm expected to move into the region Wednesday has prompted NV Energy to issue a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for southwest Carson City to Genoa and the Virginia City Highlands.

UPDATE: NV Energy has de-activated approximately 5,500 electricity customers in Washoe County in the area of the fire at Callahan Ranch.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
