Reactions to Nugget Project petition (last update)
I sent an email to all of the members of the Carson City Board of Supervisors for their reaction to the initiative petition filed on Friday to put the Nugget Project to a vote in 2012.
We now have responses from the four supervisors, and I just added Mayor Bob Crowell's comment below.
The first response I got was from Shelly Aldean:
"In my opinion, delaying a decision on this issue until the 2012 election will effectively kill the project. It is unfortunate that this action is being taken prior to the completion of the actual analysis which will determine the feasibility of the development. Contrary to popular opinion, no decision has been made on whether or not to proceed with this project and I, for one, do not intend to render a final verdict on the merits of the development until it has been thoroughly vetted and I am convinced that Carson City will not be exposed to any undue financial risk."
Update: Robin Williamson said she just got the materials, adding "I think it is premature to reduce options before the feasibility report on the proposal is complete."
Update: Pete Livermore weighs in: "I'm very proud of the citizens of Carson City. They have expressed to me their interest in this project. I have on two Board of Supervisor's meetings requested that the Board place this 1/8 cent sales tax hike on the next election as an advisory question. Both times we have been denied. So as always, if your elected body does not hear what the public is asking, than you are left with whatever options remains to them. Don't sell the citizens of Carson City short. I support the wishes of the voters."
Later Update: Spoke with Molly Walt, who said she thinks the petition is premature before the research is done to find out if the project is feasible, and what the final plans would be.
"It's just a concept, and we are just trying to find out if it's something we can do," Walt said. "We are still in the first stages here."
Walt also said, as Aldean expressed previously, that she doubts voters will be informed enough to judge this project, and that it is the supervisors' duty to make these decisions.
Last Update: Bob Crowell told me he agrees that the petition is premature. "There is no proposal or project right now. None of those decisions have been made. There are a lot of moving pieces, and this was never fait accompli."
