Carson City Greenhouse Project fundraiser to feature funk-soul supergroup Tower of Power
There will be no better place to be Thursday, July 14, than at Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City for the eighth annual Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project, when the summer air fills with the unstoppable rhythm, blues and funk sounds of Tower of Power, who have delighted crowds since they first began playing in Oakland, Calif.
“This event had grown from an event that started 10 years ago, out of Charlie’s love for music and his idea that we should celebrate talented musicians and artists, and has now become the biggest fund-raiser of the year for The Greenhouse Project, this being the eighth year that the event is being conducted for that reason,” said Karen Abowd, president of The Greenhouse Project and co-owner of Cafe at Adele’s with her husband, Chef Charlie Abowd.
The Greenhouse Project, a state-of-the-art growing facility on Carson High School’s campus, provides a learning facility for area schools, has fostered a thriving FFA and agriculture program at the high school, and also provides fresh vegetables for the under served in the community, as well as produce to be used in the school’s culinary department.
This greatly anticipated event has sold out in recent years, thanks to the community’s generous support as well as the ever-increasing caliber of talent.
With Tower of Power, the bar continues to be raised.
“We are grateful to have John Procaccini of Chili Bob Entertainment to navigate bookings and technical execution each year, and thanks in large part to that expertise have provided for the continuing Greenhouse operations while bringing in great entertainment,” Karen said. “We are so excited to bring such high-caliber entertainment to Carson City this year in an event that would never have been possible without community support.
Corporate sponsors this year include NV Energy, Carson Tahoe Hospital, Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers, Hop & Mae Adams Foundation, Gold Dust West Casino & Hotel, Carson City and Cafe at Adele’s.
“Their generosity is invaluable in producing the event and continuing Greenhouse operations,” Karen said. “Seeing the smiles and everyone having a good time each year makes all the work by countless volunteers worthwhile.”
The annual live auction this year so far includes Dinner with the Band, which has become an annual tradition; Lake Tahoe boating trip and lunch; a day of outdoor wildlife photography instruction and lunch with Larry Burton; Sonoma Music Festival package; wine tasting for 20 at Total Wine; and more. Anyone wishing to donate a trip, dinner, services or outdoor package is asked to call Karen Abowd at 775-232-8626.
There will also be the annual silent auction with all proceeds going to Capital City FFA is also conducted. The theme for the FFA auction this year is Yard Art, which proved successful last year. All proceeds from the silent auction afford students the opportunity to travel to state and national trainings and competitions at which they have excelled. Don donate an item or for more information, please call Charlie Mann, ag teacher and FFA leader at 775-830-4548.
“We could not do this work alone and everybody’s efforts have and continue to make The Greenhouse Project’s work, possible,” Karen said. “The energy and participation by all, is greatly appreciated.”
